Growing up we were 5 sisters...and mom was always coming up with ways to save on cost to feed a growing family. I remember that she used instant potatoes in the tuna cakes. It make enough to fee a family of 7. We love salmon cakes and this recipe reminded me of my younger days...Thank you for sharing. I have tried all of your recipes so far and love them all...I know that is going to be a hit /my husband loves salmon patties...We are big fans of your N.R.Hills, Texas..you make us proud.

My family has always like my salmon cakes, so I decided to try this recipe that I saw on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009.. I made them tonight and they were great! I didn't have any bread crumbs on hand so I used cracker crumbs and that worked very well. I will be making these again!

First, this is the first show on the Food Network I have ever been tempted to comment on because I have simply loved all of Melissa's shows. As with the countless number of other posts, I too, wish this Network would rerun Melissa's shows or at least post them to be viewed online like her former competitors'.
About the salmon cakes....the taste of the bacon in the cakes was delicious. I was a little startled by the bones in the can, but beyond that, the recipe was wonderful, and my husband who rarely enjoys seafood ate every bite!

Fantastic! I'm a single, so I scaled this down using a small can of salmon. I estimated the other ingredients and probably went shy on the mayo. The thing is, this is a method and Melissa presented it with inspiration. Yes, use tuna, crab even ground turkey would work! Also, Panko bread crumbs - all I ever use. Thanks Melissa, see ya next week!

I have a similar recipe that I've made for years. I haven't made my mom's recipe at all since I started using it.
For any of you who couldn't keep them from falling apart while cooking, you have to leave them alone and don't poke at them when they are in the pan.

What an excellant idea! Who knew? I have made the same ol' salmon cakes for years. My husband loves fish and is tired of the same boring recipes. He loved these. I will be making these again and again.

I substituted the Salmon with Crab Meat and it was delicious. Would definitely make this again. Funny because I rarely make any recipes from the Food Network but this one caught my eye and was executed nicely!

BTW - my patties did not crumble - have to include the potatoes, makes a big difference.

Can't wait to see other recipes!

I warned my sister of these recipes but she insisted on trying them. Unfortunately it was also for a dinner with her husbands boss. The recipe listed on this site does mention bones in passing but does not mention that those same bones are EVERYWHERE in those cans. During the aired segment, Mel COVERS the salmon bones with her hand and moved on. The asparagus was not roasted after 10 minutes and they CANNOT carmelize. They emit no natural sugars that would produce such an effect. However, they would BROWN eventually. My poor sister served raw asparagus and salmon bone patties to her husbands boss. Lovely.

I have been cooking for 18 years, and I rarely mess up a recipe. These cakes fell apart in the pan and made a huge mess. They looked so good on the show, but even while I watched it, I thought okay how can that much mayo and mustard stay together, then I thought okay maybe the bread crumbs hold it together. (I should of went with my own thoughts what a waist of money and time, but hey they dogs loved it!
