The dish was excellent! I have made it at least a dozen times so far. It is definately a weekend dish for us since it does take a good amount of time during which you have to attend the stove vigilantly. Thanks for the great recipe! It's a keeper!

Wows and raves from the group! Followed the potatoes verbatim- they were great. Feel free to use your own combinations of meats, my mixture evolved into using ham, ground beef and bacon. Be sure to season generously. Also increased the tomato paste liberally (increased umami and it really enriched all the flavors. I tripled the recipe, took one pan to the St Pattys party, shared one with friends and we devoured the remaining pan ourselves.

Good flavor, but, Do yourself a favor. Brown your meat separate from the onion mixture and put with the cooked bacon for later incorporation.Put the carrots in at the same time as the onion, they caramelize nicely together. I had to add more flour and tomato paste to thicken.
As far as it being better the next day, lol, yeah, like it lasted that long before it was gone!! Love the beer, rosemary and garlic flavor profile!

It smells good and I am sure it will taste great as well (to be posted! My only complaint is that there are too many steps and it seems like I am overcooking this beef. I wanted to try something different from my traditional recipe but I don't want to spend this much time on a simple comfort food like shepherd's pie. //// Update. I thought the recipe was tasty but very soupy. I don't think I would make this again. Sorry!

By far the favorite of the family. I too was a little nervous about the amount of garlic. It was PERFECT!!! The next time I make it I am going to add more carrots and peas. I want to have some in every bite. But that's just me. Great recipe!!!

I've read a few complaints about the amount of garlic, and I thought it was perfect. After boiling the garlic down and combining with the beef stock, it was just right.
This dish was served in quadruple batch at a St. Patrick's day dinner along side corned beef and cabbage and a bread pudding. All 22 guests loved Shepherd's Pie and esp the potato topping.
I will make this dish again!

it came out great...the only thing i changed from the recipe was i dropped the number of garlic colves...i only put three of four instead of ten...but i will say that the pie came out great. it was tasty and everyone loved it. and although there are a lot of steps, they are easy and its very easy to make. make this and enjoy...and everything that you need to make this is things you more than likely have in your pantry.

Absolutely delicious! Made it for the first time for my family last night and a huge hit! The only thing I would do differently is less Rosemary.

Very tasty! Pictures of my recipe on my blog (jessica-thebookcook dot com. I was out of sugar (crazy I know so I used brown sugar to caramelize the onions. I used a Yuenling light for the beer, and I used a mix of grated swiss and parmesan for the topping. I put my in individual ramakins, which was very cute! I added a little extra flour so it would thicken up quicker. I did take a shortcut on the potatoes and used the Simply Potatoes pre-made mashed potatoes and added a little sour cream and garlic to them. For the carrots, I used pre-cut carrot sticks and then easily cut into cubes. I garnished with a mix of parsley and rosemary. Very tasty!
