Pretty good Cottage Pie. I made two versions, one vegetarian and one meat. The vegetarian was simple to substitute ingredients. Just use vegetable broth instead of beef, skip the bacon, and cook up meatless crumbles. The frozen Boca ones work well. Few things I changed second time around. First, the beer actually seems to stifle the meat and vegatable flavors, so I used only 6 oz. I used Sam Adams Boston Lager, but a lighter beer might not have the same effect. Second, after adding the broth, and even with less beer, it still took way too long to cook down. So I added only 1/3 cup of the broth to the filling. Third, a little cayenne pepper (1-2 tsp added with the tomato paste helps if you prefer a little bite.

We substituted beef broth for the beer. We used chopped turkey breast instead of chopped meat. We made our own mashed potatoes, however we did add cream cheese, but no garlic cloves. Rosemary is too strong for our tastes, so we used thyme instead. We followed everything else in this recipe. It came out so delicious, I can't wait to make it again. It's very easy to follow.

I made this recipe for my neighborhood book club meeting last night and it was a hit!
Easy to follow directions, even though it took me much longer to complete than the recipe stated. Everyone loved it!

You must be madd. 10 cloves of garlic in the potatos is way to much. I used 5 cloves and even my wife who loves garlic said it was over board. If I ever make this again I will only use 1 or 2 cloves.

We loved this! The only thing I would change is the rosemary, a bit too strong. I think next time I'll use thyme or an Italian blend.

Delightful recipe BUT IT IS NOT Shepherd's Pie. Anything that is named "Shepherd's Pie?" is made with LAMB
period, no exceptions.
Her recipe is COTTAGE PIE
As anyone from England will tell you.

I made this last year for St. Patrick's Day as most of my family does not like corned beef (not really Irish anyway. It was wonderful and there were not any leftovers. Traditionally Shepherd's Pie is made with lamb, however I have had a hard time finding ground lamb...I would love trying it with ground lamb to keep it more with my Irish heritage. It is time consuming but definately worth the effort..try it and I promise you will not be disappointed.

Personal gripe here, but shepherds pies should contain lamb not beef. Cottage pies have beef in... That being said yummy!
