Fudgy mix makes the better brownie in my opinion. Adding chile and chocolate to the mix does give it a "Mexican" flair....Classic Mexican Mole sauce is famous for it's use of chocolate and chili together! The culinary world has used the same combo of chocolate and chili in cupcakes, ice cream, and even cocktails!!! Love it!

I'm not even Mexican and I'm offended. Adding chili powder to something doesn't make it Mexican.

Why so easily offended? As Americans, aren't we proud of our freedom of choice? If you don't want to use a box mix, then don't. I think there are enough recipes on this site to please even the fussiest cooks.

Think you're in the minority about being offended. As someone who works full-time outside the home with 2 schoolage children, I just don't have the time to make everything from scratch, so how would using a shortcut hurt? Sorry, we can't all be perfect like you. Maybe some of us would like to use the extra time we save by using a box mix and spend it with our families and friends.

I am not offended either. I do both--use mixes and bake from scratch. When I have the time, I love cooking everything from sratch--but I don't always have the time---or the money. Somethimes mixes on sale are much cheaper than scratch. But there are people out there that are terrified of cooking---I work with a very sweet gal who goes into panic mode anytime she has to cook for more than just her husband. Recipes like this are absolutely fantastic for people like my co-worker because it allows them a little creativity with the safety net of a mix. Mixes and packaged foods are also a great way for kids to learn about cooking. Doctoring a mix with this and that gives them confidence to go out to bigger and more complicated endeavors. So no I am not offended--I say keep up the great work.

I am not offended! Sandra Lee uses shortcuts all the time, hence semi homemade. So if you feel better making your brownies from scratch then do so but don't chastise those who want to put together a quick dessert.

Am I the only person who is offended by seeing a recipe on Food Network that utilizes a boxed brownie mix? C'mon people, brownies from scratch are one of the easiest things to make... EVER.

I prepared this exactly the way the recipe says, and it came out great! The only thing I did different was bake the brownies in an 8 X 8" pan instead of the one the recipe calls for. I like thicker brownies. I used Breyers Dulce de Leche ice cream and sprinkled it with a dash of cinnamon. The ice cream was the perfect complement to the brownie (which I heated up in the microwave just before topping it with the ice cream and serving. In fact, the dessert was the perfect complement to the meal I made: Spicy chili with corn bread and sangria! I think next time I will serve this with a little Reddi whip as well!

They taste better made with fudge brownie mix than a dark chocolate mix (I tried both. Also use the variation for cake like brownies. In Seattle, I once had similar brownies served with vanilla bean ice cream and caramelized pineapple. Can't wait to try it with this recipe. Yum!!

After reading other comments I only added just under 1/2t chipotle powder (the jalepeno sounded good too but didn't have any on hand. This worked for us. Just a little kick and a great combination with the chocolate! We could probably add a little more chipotle (maybe just over 1/2t next time.
