We had a very similar salad at the Halekulani Hotel, Oahu. One time, the slices were replaced with chunks of the avocado and papyrus. I'm sure, anyone who eats the two foods has had experience of slices, chunks or guacamole. Consistent flavors but different textures My point...Michael is a great resource for great foods! This recipe can me used as "part of" a buffet or can be used as the entree itself (maybe with shrimp/lobster to be accompanied by italian ciabatta bread and a creamy, smooth wine...textures galore!

I made this salad exactly as directed and the family devoured it. This was my first Michael Chiarello recipe and there will be many more if all of his recipes are this good.

Any mention of too many red onions is nonsense. The onions brought out the flavor of everything else. I added a mango to the mix and it was absolutely fantastic.

I saved this recipe until we went to Hawaii. Purchased exquisite papayas and avocados, so much better than what we get on the mainland and so much less expensive. Anyway, the dressing is good, but the onion totally overpowered the delicate flavors of both the avocado and papaya. DO NOT ADD ONION, that is all you will taste and onion and papaya are not two flavors which blend. It was awful and we threw it away. Next time we tried papaya and avocado together with a light dressing and it was wonderful.

I like avocados...I like papayas...pair them together with the dressing
and the flavors together are really good. It's a very light and
refreshing salad and it would be great served with any spicy
dish...say hot wings or chili...

I wasn't a big fan of the papaya. I think next time I make it I will use mango instead and I'd like to add some crunch to it (it was a little too soft on soft so I think I'll add celery. But the dressing is great and I love the idea behind it.
