I have made these three or four times and they are delicious. Like other reviewers, I cut the sugar...to 1/4 cup (actually Splenda. At this very moment, they are cooking away and I think I'm going to run in and add a little chopped onion and some garlic powder...as others have suggested. Those additions will probably give this recipe a little extra oomph. I find the show a little to loud and tiresome. Gina's antics make me jumpy. Most of their recipes are excellent but Gina is off-putting for sure. Anyway, try these because you won't be sorry. They reheat beautifully too.

I love the Neelys. This is a great comfort food. The flavor is sweet but not too sweet. Easy to make. Another great recipe from the Neelys. I would love to meet them.

I loved this one without the sugar, I only cooked it for an hr though, not the hr & 1/2.... I make this same recipe but w/sausage in place of the ham & just season to taste cooked in a light beef broth. I like it much better.

I did use fresh beans as well as the sugar and I think the beans were fine. I think the sugar does add something to the recipe. Made it twice so far and will keep on my list for sure!

I love the Neelys, but I have to say that I was very disappointed when I made this tonight. First off, I couldn't imagine cooking green beans for 45 minutes, so I waited to put them in until the last 15 minutes and they were still mushy. The ham wasn't as tender as I had oped. I followed other reviewers' advice and omitted the sugar--I was glad I did. The recipe though still lacked that famous Neely "kick." Not sure what to add, but it was pretty bland. I think it's a good basic recipe to start with, but it definitely needs something more.

I used a large smoked ham shank and added 6 bulbs of green onions. Also added a couple dashes of red pepper flakes and omitted the sugar. Cooked it in a slow cooker on high for first 2 hours, then turned it down to low for another 4 hours. Was wonderful. Try to use fresh green beans from your garden, if possible.

This is a great recipe without the sugar. Also, it's difficult to overcook the beans so be sure you don't undercook them.

I remember a friend of my moms used to make this dish back in the early 70's. Now that I am older I really don't care much for ham hocks so I substituted them with pre cooked turkey butts, and used just a little less sugar and a dash of garlic powder and red pepper flakes. It was so good that we were soaking our cornbread in the pot liqur! I will be making this dish a staple for fall and winter!

yummy! my MIL also gave me a similar receipe for a quick dinner fix, except we use chopped ham steaks, fresh green beans, and red potatoes with a little water in a pressure cooker.
