I thought it was OK, the kids were not that into it. It won't make the rotation.

My husband and I were hoping to both recreate and perhaps improve on the sloppy Joe's we were served as children. I followed this recipe exactly, using high-quality beef and KCM Original sauce. The resulting sandwiches were good, but not excellent. I think we were expecting a brighter, tangier tomato flavor. Instead, the meat dish had a rather flat, smoky barbecue flavor. It is likely that our choice of barbecue sauce had a huge influence on the outcome of the dish, so I recommend you choose yours wisely. If I were to make this dish again using this recipe, I'd saute a chopped yellow onion with the peppers.

I believe the grocery store needs to be rearranged, meat section first. I shop for whatever meat has the best deal and then I figure out what I'll do for the week. This week it was ground chicken and it needs something for flavor! :- My twist was ground chicken and ground pork (2 parts chicken, 1 part pork. I also added chopped sweet onion and 2 chopped jalepeno's (seeds, ribs and all....love the heat. I also used a basic BBQ Rub to season the meat and my own BBQ Sauce, both not unlike the Neely's, a Memphis style of rub and sauce.
I had Sloppy Joe's in mind, but not picking up canned or packaged mix. I went surfing thinking how hard can this be....I came across this as I was already thinking about BBQ Sauce. YUM!!! Thank you Spencer for a great idea! Also, I had forgotten the tomato sauce and paste, just tasted like BBQ. Adding the tomato sauce and paste is what turned it from BBQ to Sloppy Joe!! Great Recipe either with beef or chicken.
Keep it up!!

I'm not a huge fan of the Neely's, but I was specifically looking for a BBQ sloppy joe recipe and came across this one. Delicious!! I used a sweet & spicy mustard BBQ sauce. This one's a keeper!

I made up my own recipe minus the peppers as my kids wouldn't touch it if the peppers were included and I don't like green peppers anyway, and what do you know? It's almost exactly like this. Getting the right BBQ sauce is a big deal. We like the sweeter ones vs the more vinegar --Open Pit, for example. Same goes for the tomatoes and my preference is to get a cheap can of diced tomatoes + but good brand of tomato paste. This is a super recipe and very addictive!

I never think to make sloppy joes. I guess I always thought it was too much trouble. And forget about Manwich. This is such an easy recipe and WOW, was it delicious. I did add a small onion, and the only reason why was based on some of the reviews that I read. I used a chipoltle bbq sauce which adds a touch of spicy and still added the tabasco. This is definetly going in my recipe box!

I made this and enjoyed it. I added onions because I like them and felt like this dish could benefit from them. I used sweet BBQ sauce and I would probably not use that kind again because I found it to be too sweet. It was still good. Another thing 2lbs of meat went a long way. I think it came out to around 6-8 portions, which is fine considering that's how many buns I had. I would definitely make it again.
