    Very very disappointing. Followed recipe exactly, used premium ingredients, middle never got down while outside became crispy and the entire thing was inedible. At 35 minutes a knife stuck in the middle was still liquid. Had to throw entire thing in the bin. Do not try this recipe.

    Very disappointed. Couldn't taste the chocolate, fruit flavors totally overpowered by the orange zest. I took a tip here and switched some figs for the massive amount of prunes spec'd- and the figs took over. With all the different fruit in this, proportion is really critical, or else they'll get drowned out. When you add up the ingredients, this is an expensive cake. It's really a shame, as I was looking forward to developing a closer cooking relationship with Nigella.

    I've just done it but with cranberries and figs instead of prunes...it is just perfect!!! The house smells like Christmas and I feel like a domestic goddess! ;

    I love, love, love this recipe. Nigella has a winner with this
    cake. Friends ask me around Halloween if I will be making it for
    Christmas. Easy to follow directions and smells so good baking.
    Have a tough time finding the stars and edible glitter though. Have to try online.

    Gorgeous cake, I make it year on year and in between. You can alter the fruit and liqueur to taste I.e. apricots for prunes and brandy/Cointreau for Tia Maria. Just making one for my daughter's birthday decorated with chocolate match makers and shavings.

    We made the cake for the first time this Christmas and served it warm with icecream as a Christmas pudding substitute. Positive reviews were received from all sides of the table. We wanted a cake that was a bit more chocolatey, so we added a small bar of dark chocolate (smashed up and folded in right at the end. The final product was a fruit cake with a mild chocolate flavour in the background, rather than a chocolate cake with fruit. But, what a lovely fruit cake! The texture was dense, velvety and a little sticky; the flavours were well balanced; and it was lovely and moist, especially after re-heating. I will definitely be making it again next Christmas.

    I can't fathom the negative reviews. This fruitcake rocks - period. I've made it for at least 5 Christmas Eves, and even people who are suspicious of fruitcake in general like it. I do leave out the nuts generally, but other than that it is awesome stuff.

    It didn't live up to my expectations. A bit too heavy.
