The recipe is fantastic. It has become a favorite of mine. I use cubed pork instead of the pork shoulder. It gets very tender in no time. Everything about this recipe is great.

wow, these were so good! I used turkey sausage and turkey bacon, and it was very tasty! I used 1 lb frozen peas, and actually think I could have used two pounds, there was alot of extra tasty liquid.

I used a pork chop in place of chicken. I chopped everything up and put it into the crock pot. I did not brown anything and I slow cooked it for about 14 hours. I added a capfull of liquid smoke. Do not add the cup of water it deflavors the receipe. I would have given it fives stars but too much liquid. Everyone loved it and it was simple to cook with a slow cooker.

Classic! I come from a family of southern farmers and cooks... All ingredients perfect...except didn't have chicken stock so I made a stock using smoked pork hocks...also used red pepper flakes instead of cayenne pepper. (For stock: start with 8 cups of water, one large smoked pork hock, low boil, covered for at least one hour, should render 4.5 to 5 cups Agree...less water needed, no mashing required (minus one cup water Super yummy and better than Moms...sorry Mom! Thanks Neely's!

This recipe has made a black-eyed pea lover out of me! I've lived in North Carolina for 16 years and didn't know what I was missing. I can never find the pork shoulder in small enough size for me and my husband, so I substitute whatever other pork I can find - usually a loin chop of some kind. Serve it over rice with a side of Gina's Best Collard Greens. YUM!
