First, I must confess that I RARELY follow a recipe exactly and this is no exception. I'm sure it would have been fine exactly as written, but I wanted to convert it to a full one-dish meal.

I had a small amount of cooked chicken, one cooked sausage and some portabella mushrooms (too much to throw away, not enough to make a full meal. I chopped the mushrooms (removing the dark gills and sauted them with the onions, garlic and asparagus. Then I chopped the meat into bite sized pieces and added it to the egg/cheese mixture and stirred it in well. Otherwise I followed the recipe.

I baked it 20 minutes and it wasn't quite done, but that may be related to the extra volume I added. Also, I baked it in a 2 quart casserole which is deeper than some casseroles. If you use a shallower, wider baking dish, it probably wouldn't need the extra 10 minutes I gave it.

Also the panko crumbs did not brown, but I'm sure that is due to the dish being too deep. I'd recommend a larger, shallow dish for this recipe. In the end, it was very good and disappeared completely off the plates--- a success in a family who I'm the only one who actually LIKES asparagus.

But it is pretty high fat with the cream. Next time I'll try milk. (I didn't this time because I had the cream that needed to be used up and I had made so many other changes. I didn't want to change something was so 'structural' to the recipe too.
