I have never made or have desired to make grits! The sausage in this recipe is what reeled me in. My husband thoroughly enjoyed this meal, and he is a great judge of food. I really enjoyed this meal also, but my kids were not crazy about it at all (I think it's a texture thing... Oh we'll, more leftovers for mommy and daddy. ;-

I had to convince my husband to try this recipe. It was his first time having grits, and he absolutely loved it. He hates chumky tomatoes so I used tomato sauce instead of the diced but overall it was easy, very tasty and awesome.

I was looking for a dish I could make using kielbasa, but my son doesn't like kraut and my husband didn't want kielbasa. So as I searched recipes this one came up as a possibility (no kraut! and shrimp (which my husband loves!. Here in CA, you don't find grits in the pantry on a regular basis, so I used what I had...white rice.
I also:
- was out of bell pepper
- used more kielbasa
- used less shrimp
- used more wine (by mistake
Served it over the rice that was simmered in chicken broth. (But I did not add the cream nor cheese.
IT WAS EXCELLENT!!! I'm sure the actual recipe is even better, but I probably would agree with the others that if I HAD used grits with cream and cheese, I would have wanted more spice.
My picky 10yo even loved it. That's saying a lot!! He picked out the shrimp, while my hubby picked out the sausage. Everyone was happy and it was SUPER EASY!!
p.s. I added my shrimp and sautéed BEFORE adding the sausage and it wasn't too tough.

Easy to prepare, quick [assuming you use previously deveined and peeled shrimp] and very tasty, but do not overcook shrimp. I would suggest reducing boiling time at end of recipe by one or two minutes. I substituted andouille sausage for more spice and because kielbasa is not available where I live in Mexico. Next time I will add some diced canned jalapenos for more zest.

this recipe was fantastic. it was quick, easy and taste great. Didn't use white wine only chicken broth. I was only a fan of grits in the morning until now. So proud of myself I took a picture of my dish and put it on facebook. Making it again for dinner tomorrow and inviting a few friends over. Thanks Neely's !!!!!!!!

I'm from the south so I love a good shrimp and grits recipe and this one did not disappoint! My whole family loved it and I even ended up making a second batch it was so popular! The only change I made was I added about a tablespoon of creole seasoning just to give it a little kick. This one will definitely be a go to recipe!
