I have made these several times and loved them! They are like a shortbread cookie and a family favorite. I now make these instead of a traditional sugar cookie at Christmas time.

I followed the recipe exactly as instructed and the cookies came out great. Everyone at our Christmas party loved them and asked for the recipe. I put homemade icing on some, added pecans and powdered sugar to others and left some plain. All were gone before the party was over. Not sure what some reviewers meant by crumbly. They must of left something out of the recipe. Looking forward to trying other Neely recipes.

Dry, crumbly, difficult dough to work, and bland....even frosted and sprinkled with sugar.

This will NOT be my go-to cookie recipe in years to come. The dough took forever to come together and was not just firm but HARD when removed from the fridge. Why refrigerate it for two hours when it then needs to sit on my counter for a half hour to even start to yield to a rolling pin? Then it was like rolling dry clay, crumbling and cracking constantly. The cookies taste ok, but are a bit on the bland side, and are SUPER fragile, making them very difficult to transport. Sorry, Neelys, but next year I'm going back to Alton Brown.

I honestly don't know why this recipe is rated so high. I tried to make this recipe, followed the directions exactly and when the dough came out of the mixer, it was grainy and mealy. I thought maybe they just needed to be refrigerated, however when I removed the dough from the fridge after the suggested timeframe, the dough was hard as a rock (I'm not exaggerating here, those balls of dough could've killed someone if thrown at them. When I waited a good 5 minutes for the first ball to be somewhat pliable, I started to roll them out and they were still very mealy inside. No way these things were holding up to roll-out and cutting.
I wouldn't suggest this recipe for anyone. I plan on using Alton Browns recipe next time. I wish they hadn't placed this recipe on the top Holiday Cookies list. Not top at ALL.

These cookies were AWESOME!!! I made these as a gift for someone who almost didn't get them. That is how good they were. I was put off by the fact that I had to refrigerate the dough, but I will now make this my "go-to" recipe for butter cookies. I read that some people had difficulty cutting the cold dough, but the dough should have been the same consistency of cold butter. Do not cut with a butter knife, use a chef knife, or flatten with rolling pin and use cookie cutters.
Thank you Neely's! Before your recipe, my butter cookies were..."special." Now, they are AWESOME!

These are delicious, light, crisp cookies that taste simply of butter. I let the dough warm a little on the counter and rolled between sheets of floured waxed paper. I am making a second batch now, as I know these will be a favorite with my family. My first Neely recipe and it won't be my last.

uh..not the best..kind of bland and boring. Mother gave me a better recipe that is awesome. Why didn't i call mom first:..LOL. Sorry..I love the Neeleys but this recipe is not a winner. My suggestion is go ahead and add an entire pound of butter...powdered sugar on top maybe?....will not make again.

These are amazing!!! I brought them to a family reunion, and everyone raved about them. I followed the recipe as it states, and I had no problems. I baked mine around eight minutes, and because they were smaller than the cookies shown. If you use a smaller cutter, definitely watch for burning. They were super easy and super fun to make. A crowd favorite of every age, definitely a recipe to save!
