These cookies are simple and scrumptious!!! With all the rich food we tend to eat during Holiday festivities, these cookies are a perfect ending to a gathering.
They hold their shape when baking and can be decorated in minutes. I served them at a College Christmas Party at our church and the party goers loved them. I plan to bake the rest of the cookie dough for a family Christmas party. They are beautiful cut out as stars, iced with white icing, and sprinkled with gold sprinkles. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah

To answer the complaint about lack of leavener in the recipe. I am a chef and also a person who grew up with a grandmother that baked wonderful things. I actually prefer a butter cookie recipe without leavener, as they do not change shape when baked. ( cookies baked with leavener tend to puff and detail can be lost. They are more like a shortbread than a traditonal cut out cookie and, I think, taste better than cookies made with a leavener, so there. As for the degree of difficulty on this cookie recipe, of course its simple. Perhaps it wasn't included in the list based on technical difficulty, but rather because it reminds us all of Christmastime. Just ENJOY the holidays, okay?

Butter cookies are great because you can always add any extras you want. Keep that in mind as you decorate your butter cookies or add nuts. As far as Pat and Gina's love they show for one another, thats how it is at my home and my parents. My Dad and my husband are great cooks and I appreciate them for wanting to be in the kitchen baking let alone cooking a delicious meal. So keep the christmas cookie going and I'm going to try them all! One more thing ladies, some ovens heat different than others, so next time test a cookie or two first, then decide what temperature is best for you. Happy Holidays!

This is a great "butter cookie" recipe. Instead of using just flour to roll out the cookies, I blended confectioner's sugar along and flour with good results. To all of you "complainers" out there. . . choose your battles! If your comments do not change/alter the recipe, don't complain. You stand up to the challenge of getting in front of an audience and judges to cook/bake. . . see how well you fare then! So what if a pig was shown; use your imagination and choose another cookie cutter. Check the temperature on your appliances; you know they vary. Merry Christmas!

ok - haven't baked them yet but the dough is yummy so that's a good sign!!!! I LOVE butter cookies - so couldn't wait to try this simple, ordinary recipe out. I added a little almond extract as well. This dough was so easy to handle once mixed. That's one of the reasons I hate doing rollout cookies - because the dough never seems quite right. But I think this one is going to be perfect.

Sorry, but I have to agree with the others who stated that this recipe is not at all special for the 12 days of cookies. What about it IS a cut above? I have been baking this same recipe for 40 years, and it is a good butter cookie but, really what is so special about it that the FN had to put it in with the 12 days of cookies? There is nothing about this cookie that says "special for Christmas".
FN's christmas cookies have been a real disapointment so far!

My family loved the cookies, they were not to sweet, and went wonderful with the apple cider we served for the party we had. I love watching the Neely's, they really have love for their cooking and their family and friends. Family values and good eating. I do think that people need to really read the whole recipe and don't add to much flour when rolling them out. Yummm
