Wanted to make this coconut cake for my family again, made the cake in the morning so it would cool. Was ready to make the 7 minute frosting and said "Oh, no!" can't mix this frosting in the pan on the stove. But thought, and decided to try it my way. I cooked up the water, salt, corn syrup in the pan for about 3 minutes. Meanwhile, I was wisking up the egg whites. I slowly pored the hot mixture into the eggwhites and it worked! Beat the heck out of the mixture and it actually came out better this way. I did not add any vanilla and it tasts just great! Just thought I would share this with any one who did the same thing I did by trading up to a wonderful Kitchenaid!

Like many of the other comments, my mother this frosting for everyone of the cakes on my birthday. It is to die for. I have searched for many years for this recipe for years. My mother knew it so well, she made it from memory. When she developed dementia, I thought it was lost forever. Of course, mine does not stiffen like my mom's did. Any suggestions to make the frosting stiffer?

    Thanks for your help.

My grandmother used to make this frosting, and I'm so glad I now have the recipe. My mom loves coconut so my grandma made a white cake with coconut milk, used the white 7 minute frosting, and sprinkled shredded coconut on top. I can't wait to surprise my mom with grandma's coconut cake!

My Mom used to make this exact recipe from the Fanny Farmer cookbook years ago - but our favorite was the Caramel version - substitue 1 cup of white sugar for brown - and put it on a chocolate cake - unbelievable!

I used one tsp. organic fair trade vanilla from Frontier instead of 1.5 tsp. vanilla as the recipe calls for. Since organic fair trade vanilla is quite strong, the flavor is amazine even with one tsp. I can't believe how awesome it turned out. Even better than Martha Stewart's recipe!

I melted some instant coffee in a bit of hot water then filled the rest of the way with cold water to make the 1/3 c. of water. Mocha flavor in this heavenly frosting over chocolate cake with drops of chunky peanut butter baked in the cake - oh my! My husband said it was the best everything ever. Saved this recipe to my "favorites" recipe file. Thank you Paula Dean.
