It was pretty good. I used oyster sauce in place of the sugar, used 4 garlic cloves, I used celery salt instead of regular salt, and then used beef broth in place of the water. I also added about 1/2 tsp of ground fennel and simmered for about 45 minutes. If the tomato sauce is overcooked it gets that acidic flavor. item not reviewed by moderator and published
We loved it so much I looked up her recipe and made it again - this time I simmered it in the slow cooker and it was even better. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Made it again with 3 pounds of hamburger and was still amazing - love the meatiness, flavor is an A+++ item not reviewed by moderator and published
This is extremely easy. I browned up ground beef, Italian sausage and onions first. Then I added that with all the other ingredients (except for the sugar in my crockpot and cooked on low for 4 hours. My family doesn't like sweet spaghetti sauce, so I kept out the sugar and it was perfect. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Loved this one!! Had it last night and I ate way too much!! Stuffed and Happy in Florida! item not reviewed by moderator and published
+1 to zucchini and only one TBL. sugar. Great sauce, super easy. Very nice with homemade pasta! item not reviewed by moderator and published
This recipe is so easy, tasty and always gets good reviews from friends. I've made this recipe about 8-10 times now, and turns out great each time. I usually end up freezing 1/2 of it, because it makes a good amount and reheats deliciously. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I love this recipe but I don't like my sauce to sweet so watch the sugar to taste.I only put in 1 tablespoon.I used my own tomatoes from the garden and it worked out great. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This is by far my favorite speghetti sauce - and so easy. The only thing I do differenly is chop the stewed tomatoes. I tried the small diced tomatoes but I was surprised that i could taste the difference. Highly recommended! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I was tired of the canned pasta sauces so tried this one. It is delicious! It is easy to put together and doesn't take long to cook. I have also frozen and vaccuum sealed this sauce for future meal. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I really love this recipe iv'e made it twice already. my family really love it! I'm gonna keep this. :~ item not reviewed by moderator and published
When I normally make spaghetti I make it a totally different way...Mom's way. But this sauce from SCRATCH was so easy to make. It taste much better if you make your own Italian seasoning (which is extremely easy as well and I'd suggest only 1 tablespoon of sugar because the first time I made it with 2 tablespoons, as instructed, and the sweetness took away from that hint of spice you hope for in Italian foods. Overall it's a great recipe for beginners, such as myself, to get comfortable and confident preparing their own meals with fresh ingredients. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Let me just say, the first time I tried this recipe, I replaced the tomato paste with more diced tomatoes, and I left out the green bell peppers; both only because I didn't have them. The second time I had everything. The only difference was that I added an extra clove of garlic because I love it, and I only added 1 lb of ground beef because I was too lazy to separate another package. It came out great, even with the same amount of everything else! The paste made it the right, thick consistency, and the peppers add liquid and flavor. It is more sweet than canned "red sauce", but I like it because of that. It's different. It's hearty and I love veggies. Pure sauce would be kind of a bore to me. If I can do it, and have my boyfriend ask for seconds, you can make it and love it, too! item not reviewed by moderator and published
It's really good, maybe a little too sweet for spaghetti sauce, but super easy to make and definitely better than store bought sauce!!! item not reviewed by moderator and published
It's so easy to make and it taste SOOOOOO much better than jarred/canned sauce. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Awesome!! I won't be buying out of a can ever again! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Best Spaghetti Sauce recipe for sure and it doesn't take long to make. I did simmer an hour instead of 30 minutes and added 1 lb of ground beef and 1/2lb of Hot Italian Sausage. Delicious!! item not reviewed by moderator and published
This is a no fail recipe. It freezes well and can be used with any pasta. I also use it for lasagna. Thanks, Paula and Alice Jo! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Made this tonight and followed the recipe exactly, only I threw in diced zucchini, added a little extra of both garlic and Italian seasoning. I think the sugar and the worcestershire make a difference. I wouldn't skip out on it. This is definitely the best homemade spaghetti sauce I've made yet. You can definitely taste the layers in this one. I'm saving it! item not reviewed by moderator and published
My husband and I had never made homemade spaghetti sauce, but are trying to be healthier, so we wanted to give it a try. This is the one we tried, and we LOVE it! We are making this one from here on out! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Absolutely incredible! I've been on the search for a great spaghetti sauce that will "wow" people. This is the one! It's so full of flavor and the aroma while it cooks makes my mouth water. Delicious! I can stop searching for a great spaghetti sauce now. My husband raved about this sauce he loved it so much. I am looking forward to making this again to serve to company. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I was a bit confused as to how much Worcestershire sauce I should add, since there is no quantity listed. So I skipped that and the green peppers, and used a couple cut up tomatoes instead of stewed ones. All in all, quite a tasty sauce! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I gave this 4 stars because I think this recipe is good as a base to start my own sauce. This is reminiscent of my mother's sauce she used to take all day to cook but sweeter and quicker. I doctored the recipe, using two 28 oz. cans of crushed San Marzano tomatoes instead of the sauce & stewed in the recipe. It makes the sauce a bit sweeter and more of a true meat SAUCE. I also let it cook longer than 30 minutes (usually I let it simmer for at least an hour, covered to avoid evaporation to allow all of the flavors to come together. This time I will be used ground italian sausage instead of ground beef...I will update after dinner... :- item not reviewed by moderator and published
This is a fantastic recipe and QUICK. I substituted 1 lb. of ground turkey and the tomatoes I used had Italian spices in them. I still added the italian seasoning, though. I also left out the green pepper (as I like them but they don't like me. So easy and good. I cannot imagine what happened with jen.e.b and her attempt (maybe next time only use half of the Italian spices. Give it another try. Thanks, Paula! I'll be making this again and again. Thinking of using the leftovers on pizza crust and top with parmesean & mozzarella cheese. How about just making the sauce, leaving out the ground beef and adding meatballs to it........hmmmm!! :- item not reviewed by moderator and published
SUPER disappointed. After having really great spaghetti sauce at a friends house this week, I was inspired...this sauce is incredibly herby tasting. Feels like you stuck a garden in your mouth. My husband (who literally eats anything tried it and said "Well, it's at least edible...." Serving a dinner party in a few hours...going to try to salvage this so Im not completely embarrassed. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This is an amazing recipe!! I added a can of rotel and more garlic. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This spagetti sauce is the best I have ever eaten! Very, Very Good! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Best spaghetti sauce...My family just loves it!!! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I made it once and now my husband won't let me buy spaghetti sauce. The whole family loves it. We have froze the left over and it was great the flovers wow. Won't go back the best sauce I have every made. I use brown sugar in it too. I cannot say enough about this recipe item not reviewed by moderator and published
Yummy! I have made this sauce 2 times already, but I did change a few things. I do not put the stewed tomatoes or bell peppers. My husband does not like bell peppers and I don't like the big pieces of tomatoes. I also add more garlic. But you have to season it to Your taste! Very good recipe! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Loved this recipe***** I read some of the reviews and decided to change up a couple of things: Added more garlic (3 cloves and about a teaspoon of crushed red pepper. I did not use tomato paste but used more stewed tomato(28oz can and tomato sauce (29oz can. Since I did not use the tomato paste, the water was not needed. Also used less sugar - about 1 tablespoon and added a can of sliced mushrooms. WOW!!! This is such a great recipe and I will be making it again and again! Anyone can heat up a jar of spaghetti sauce but to be able to say that "I made it from scratch" is way more impressive and rewarding! Paula always says on her shows to omitt the things that you don't like and gives you the basic format to create wonderful dishes. I love you Ms. Paula Deen and thank you for all of your great recipes!!! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I liked this very much. Granted it is not a true red sauce. However it is great leftovers! I make a huge pot in my crock pot then i take half and freeze it. The left over I then add beans to and mexican spices like cumin, chilli powder and I have the best chilli I have ever made! It is one of the most cost effect meals. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Very good. BTW, anything will be bland if you don't know how to season to taste. I actually cut out the Worcestershire sauce and eliminated the salt. Instead I used all spice which usually make things taste better. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I love this recipe! To rsmith120 if you already had your recipe then why look for another one I guess it's not that good. Everybody has their opinion but dont insult someone else in the process. Paula, Mrs. Deen you are the best and so is your SAUCE!!! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Is Alice Jo from South Dakota? What kind of spaghetti sauce doesn't have any basil, oregano, or bay leaves? And my aunt Lil told me "There's no vegetables in sauce, it's sauce, not vegetable soup!". Leave out the onion. green bell pepper, and Worcestershire sauce! These ingredients are FOREIGN OBJECTS IN SAUCE! Add 3 teaspoons of basil, 2 of oregano, 2 or 3 bay leaves, 2 teaspoons of black pepper, keep the 2 tablespoons of white sugar, and increase the garlic to 8 cloves. Use 2 pounds of ground beef, and brown it really well. Don't drain it. If it's good ground beef, there won't be anything to drain if it's browned right. Throw everything into a crockpot on low and simmer for 6 hours. At the end, throw in 1 1/2 cups of real parmigianno reggiano. Taste for salt. Now go make some real sauce, and never trust a sauce recipe again! As for that "Italian Seasoning", throw that stuff in the trash. item not reviewed by moderator and published
HATED IT!! Bland, and herby! Bad combination. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Awesome recipe i added fresh button mushrooms and grilled sweet italian sausage! the entire family loves it item not reviewed by moderator and published
I've made it several times and it gets better every time! I almost have it memorized. I don't add water to it- I just use the juices from the tomatos. Love it! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I made this sauce with a few changes and it was great. I only used 1 pound of hamburger, added another clove of garlic, used only 1 Tbs of sugar and I added 1 Tbs of mustard. Also, something for next time, for the 1 cup of water I will use pasta water for more flavor. Everybody like it, so this will be our sauce from now on! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I made this with meatballs, but my family didn't like this sauce. Thought it was too thick, tomatoey and sweet. BUT, the next day I took the meatballs and the sauce and made meatball sandwiches by putting them on toasted sourdough bread with melted shredded cheddar cheese. You could also do this with sub rolls and it was AWESOME that way. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I decided to make something different other than my typical spaghetti sauce. Boy, am I glad I did! I thought it was pretty good, but I was very surprised when my husband told me how much he enjoyed it! He then ventured to say he enjoyed it more than my usual sauce! Served it with garlic bread and it was perfect. Thank you for supplying this recipe Paula! It's a winner! FYI- this is a very thick sauce and very meaty which is to be expected with 1.5 lb ground beef. May want to cut back on the meat if you prefer a more "saucy" sauce. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Great Recipe and easy. The whole family ate it, and sometimes tht is hard to do. My youngest is pretty picky and she did some good damage to her bowl. :) Made Garlic toast and dinner was a hit! Thanks for making this dad look good!! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I had my own spaghetti sauce recipe that I came up with but was looking for something better. Although I enjoyed mine, it was definitely missing something. I came across this recipe and decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did!!! The only thing I changed was 3 cloves of garlic instead of 1 since my husband and I are garlic-obsessed and I added just a bit more of the seasonings. It came out perfect! I think the secret is in the sugar and the Worcestershire sauce gives it a great kick. This is now my go-to sauce and I'll be enjoying it over and over again :) item not reviewed by moderator and published

I need to know how to cut the tast of italian season. I used italian stewed tomatoes and the italian season as well. Over powering the tast...any suggestions? item not reviewed by moderator and published

This is one of those ...follow the recipe to the letter (oops with the exception of adding garlic salt ) and you wont go wrong Ive used it 3 times so far, last night it made its debut into my lasagna Everyone requested seconds! I agree with the previous poster it does remind you of manwich - or sloppy joes But knowing that the green peppers are fresh, and I was the one that put it there makes it forgiving item not reviewed by moderator and published
I thought this tasted pretty good... a nice variation to try from time to time. I found a really excellent recipe that has become my favorite. Try it out! https://sites.google.com/site/leedsdigitalmarketing/course-pages/cooking-like-a-quasi-real-italian item not reviewed by moderator and published
This sauce reminded me of a cafeteria-style or lunchroom entree, much like the spaghetti I had when growing up. It is quite sweet which I'm not accustomed to eating now. I suppose the sugar helps cut down on the acidity of the tomatoes, but I actually liked it very much! My husband didn't care for it; he likes a more traditional Italian sauce, but I have it in my recipe repertoire as a diversion from my own spaghetti sauce. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Quick, easy and my nieces loved it!!! I added fresh slices of mushroom and it's still awesome! Thanks for such a wonderful and super easy recipe!!! item not reviewed by moderator and published
This was the best spaghetti sauce recipe that I have ever tasted! I didn't have stewed tomatoes so I used diced tomatoes. Also added red pepper flakes and a little bit of hot sauce. Everyone loved it! item not reviewed by moderator and published
This stuff rocks. I loved it. My bud's loved it. I recommend. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Was looking for my mother's old recipe and could not find it. This looked similar particularly the sauce, plus onion and green pepper. However too much meat and too thick more a heavy meat sauce but tasty. I will try this again with less meat and more liquids to mix better with pasta. item not reviewed by moderator and published
GUY'S THIS IS THE BEST SPAGHEETI I HAVE EVERY MADE NO KIDDING I USE THE 3 CANS OF TOMATOES PASTE AND TWO CAN OF MUSHROOMS AND IT TURN OUT GREAT MY HUSBAND LOVES IT I ALSO PUT IT IN MY CROCK POT TO SIMMER ALL DAY THANKS PAULA.... item not reviewed by moderator and published
THe best spaghetti sauce ever!!!!!! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I have never been able to make spaghetti sauce that tasted good. But when I tasted this, I new it was going to give a repeat performance. I add meatballs to the sauce and a little meat also, because my husband likes meat in his. It's so easy to make, and very good. item not reviewed by moderator and published
After years of wtered down and not very good, I searched for a new kind of sauce, this is soooo good. everyone loved it, my 11 year old said mom it has flavor, it is good. Then the kicker was the next morning hearing, that sauce was great you have to make that again. It was so easy! It is in the family recipes forever now. item not reviewed by moderator and published
LOVE this! So good and has such a different taste then any of the others I've tried. And all the people saying this isnt authentic. Well really?! Do you see the name. Alice Jo doesnt sound like an Italian lady to me. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I loved this recipe and so did my family! It tastes just like what my mom always made for our family when I was growing up! This recipe is very simple too... who needs sauce in a jar or can that taste so artificial when the real is so simple! Yummmm! And it gets better when it reheated and served the next day!!! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I love to cook and try new things. I'd never even thought about trying to make my own spaghetti sauce, but when all I had in the cabinet was off brand sauce... I was more hesitant to use that! Found this recipe and tried it. I only made a few minor additions, I added some crushed red pepper and fresh ground black pepper, and added another clove of garlic. Oh, and also I didn't have any "italian seasoning", so I used what I had, some oregano and fresh thyme! yumm-o! At first I gotta say I was a bit hesitant. However when I ate it, I could taste all the different flavors, the bell pepper, the sweetness from the sugar (though not over powering at ALL), and even the slight hint of the spice from the red pepper. My friends all raved about it, their favorite part was the flavor the bell pepper added! This is definitely going in my recipe book, and I will use this above store bought ALL the time. P.S. .... This was just as great left over! didn't get dry when reheating at ALL. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Are you sure 1 Tablespoon of Italian seasoning is the answer. I thought it made it taste too licorice-y. Sorry we didn't care for it!!!. Still Puckering item not reviewed by moderator and published
I made this because I read some of the reviews bashing this recipe because it's not "Italian" enough for some. Well guess what, read the title of the recipe, does not say "Italian" that I can see. Food snobs are an annoying breed. Anyway, I didn't follow this recipe to a tee, I threw in a teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes, and little extra garlic. I don't stock Italian seasoning so I substituted oregano. The only stewed tomatoes I had on hand had basil in the mix but I couldn't taste it in the end product. I left out the sugar mainly because I forgot to add it, and thought it tasted just fine without. Super easy to make, and the taste is great, even if its not "Italian" enough for some of the critics. Will double this the next time I make it and freeze some. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I was looking for a last minute idea for ground beef and I found this recipe. My family loves it...even my super picky 8 year old. Thanks Paula! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I was looking for a good spaghetti sauce and just happened across this recipe. Since everything that I have ever made from Paula Deen was great before I decided to give it a try. To make a long story short, I am never buying any more jars of spaghetti sauce as long as I live. It has such a terrific flavor and I can't tell you how easy and simple it was to put together. I can't wait for the next family get together so that I can make this sauce for everyone. My daughter tried it too and she LOVES it . Give it a try, it's easy to make and easy on the pocketbook as well. Thank you Paula and Alice Jo for my new spaghetti sauce. Now I really look like I know how to cook. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I was tired of cooking my regular vagie spaghetti and wanted something simple and quick that was delicious. i wanted to swim with the kids instead of cook and i came across this recipe. the ingredients were easy to pull together in a hurry. when i saw worcestshire sauce though i was sure it was a misprint and actually left it out until the very last minute sure that it would not be good. Boy was I wrong! I will never cook spaghetti without it again. So yummy! item not reviewed by moderator and published
So it is the night before pay day and we're down to the bare bones of the pantry. I turned to the internet to find a spaghetti sauce recipe, because I've never made it before. I always buy the Hunts brand and call it a night. Like I said, though, I was down to the bare bones of the pantry when I stumbled upon this recipe. I made it for dinner and my husband was in awe and my picky brother devoured it! They LOVE this spaghetti sauce! My husband just told me that I'm now allowed to loose this recipe! Thanks so much! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I was looking for an easy spaghetti sauce that wasn't too time consuming and tasted great. This was it! I think my green pepper was a little bit big and I will use more garlic next time, but I love the heartiness of this recipe. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This sauce is so good.Just the right amount of everything.this recipe will stay in my kitchen for a long time.it goes good with homemade french bread also.thank you paula keep them coming. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Easy to make spaghetti sauce and much better than sauce in a jar. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Tried this receipe after seeing it on tv. This was my first time making a sauce from scratch and I'm 41!! This is not a difficult recipe and I must say it was very flavorful. This definately is a meat sauce though, so if you like it a l ittle saucier this is prob not the best choice. Followed the recipe exactly except i used 1 1/4 lb beef instead of 1.5 lbs. and only 1 tsp sugar. Will be making it again! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I saw this recipe on her show and I read the comments about it. I tried it and was very happy. I did buy the Italian seaoning at the store, I debated, but am glad I did-it has a nice flavor and smell, more than I could get just adding oregano and basil myself. I followed the recipe exactly except I put a little less sugar than it called for and I used brown sugar instead of white. Although I like Worcestershire sauce I wansn't sure how this would be in this recipe-it is just fine. This sauce is meatier than mine, and although I like mine a lot, I will definitely make this again. Sometimes it is nice to follow a recipe exactly and know that it will come out just fine. The big thing about this is that you don't have to cook it so long for the flavors to come out, so on a busy workday it is still doable. Even though you have your own good recipes it is nice to try alternatives. The flavors really work well in this, and when you taste it, you are like wow, this is good. With spaghetti sauce you can get the flavor too sweet, too bland, etc, etc, and with this it is really spot on. item not reviewed by moderator and published
So I loved this recipe, and I'd like to make if for a family dinner but many of them are vegetarians. What can I do to make this meatless, but still great tasting? e.g add more vegetables, or can I just take the meat out all together and not worry about compensating? item not reviewed by moderator and published
So easy to follow and the result is simply delicious! I have made it once and will make it again. Thanks Paula!!! item not reviewed by moderator and published

Before I thought i was really getting down in the kitchen with my Rague sauce until i made Alice Jo's Spaghetti Sauce. H O N E Y now im really getting down!!! My family and i really love it! I can't tell you when the last time i bought Rague. lol. Paula keep giveing us these wonder receipt. I've tried alot of yours and i havent ran into one i dont like yet. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This was so good. I changed it up a little bit though. I used hot sausage (sliced, still in the casing) instead of beef, added a red bell pepper, a jalapeno with the seeds, tripled the garlic and added crushed red pepper flakes. I served it on top of capellini. It was perfect. I can't even imagine what the sauce will taste like tomorrow! item not reviewed by moderator and published

I've used this recipe for a while now. You can use the sauce for spaghetti, lasagna, and more. The simple ingredients it has, make it easier to modify it for other dishes like chillii. Thanks...for helping me make a delicious spaghetti from scratch. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This sauce is my favorite. I wouldn't use anything except Prego until I tried this one today. I wanted to make some spaghetti and didn't have any Prego. So I tried this recipe. WOW am I impressed. I will only use this sauce, sorry Prego but I can make my own now. Thanks Paula for sharing Aliced Jo's spaghetti sauce recipe with us. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This is so quick and easy and wonderful! Love it and my picky grandson who won't eat any sauce but Mommy's {read Ragu} gobbled it up! I find the nay sayers complaining that this is not authentic to be hilarious. Did you notice the recipe title?? Mary Jo's Spaghetti Sauce doesn't even come close to claiming to be authentic -- just scrumptious! Way to go Mary Jo and Paula. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I was looking for a quick and easy spaghetti sauce and this did not disappoint. I did find it sweet but it was delicious. I used turkey instead of beef and my children gobbled it up. I will defiinitely make this again. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I've never had a better spaghetti sauce! I don't know what some people are complaining about; they must all think "Ragu" is "real" or something. Whatever! And too much sugar?? Have you seen all that nasty corn syrup in so-called "authentic" sauces?? Blech ... This recipe is also extremely economical for feeding a large family on relatively inexpensive ingredients. It sure spreads a little ground beef a long way! This is amazing! SImply the best! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I agree that this definitely isn't authentic, but it is very flavorful! If I made it again, I would skip the sugar, though, as I thought it was a little bit too sweet (I think the combination of the tomato paste and sugar puts it over the top?). I was thinking of maybe using a premade italian sauce instead of all the paste and puree, possibly, but I'll probably just try a different recipe altogether. My husband suggested I use this to stuff green peppers! Really good idea! It's decent on spaghetti and great in peppers. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I should have known when I read that the recipe called for italian seasoning that it wasn't going to be an authentic sauce. Also, it was too sweet and I only put in 1 tablespoon of sugar. Luckily my husband will eat anything, so we still ate this for dinner, but I won't ever make it again. Actually, it had the consistency of chili. I think that I will go back to my tomato paste, tomato puree, ground beef, garlic and salt mixture. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This was no Italian speghetti sauce. Way too sweet, innappropriate seasonings - just an Americanized version of an Italian sauce. If you want authentic, use another recipe. item not reviewed by moderator and published
i just made this recipe and it was wonderful!!! my oldest son and family came over and nobody is picker and he loved it. will be a weekly meal now item not reviewed by moderator and published
To die for! Super easy and the best sauce ever! Make it tonight! item not reviewed by moderator and published
This was so easy to put together and the end result was great. A little to sweet (next time I will cut the sugar in half or just omit all together) I used frozen/pre chopped onions and bell peppers and a bag of frozen sliced mushrooms. Instead of 1 1/2 lbs of hamburger I used 1/2 lb of hamburger adn 1 lb of italian sausage. I don't think I will go back to jarred sauce again. Just double the batch and freeze the extra for future meals. item not reviewed by moderator and published
