Next time I'll try for a 5 star by cooking my own beans. Canned are a bit too mushy.
I modified this a bit. I did saute the onions with chopped bacon (3 pieces, peppered bacon. Used brown mustard and added a T of cinnamon after reading Lynn's review. I also added 1 t of ground ginger as I wanted to combat the too sweet taste when I checked it, but I didn't want to add peppers just a bit of spice type heat. NOTE please I needed a big pot of beans so if only using 2 (15oz cans try 1/2 t of ginger first I use the larger cans of beans doubling the of the recipe ingredients .
I also browned the bacon for on top as I didn't want grease floating on top.

A good recipe. You MUST use Boston Style beans! We made it the first time with regular Bush's and it was a totally different dish. The Boston Style are harder to find, but the molasses that is in them is imperative. I especially like the texture of the apples - a good contrast to the cooked beans. My only disappointment when making this was the bacon on top - it shriveled, of course, and looked a bit silly. Now when I make this, I chop the bacon and cook it on the stove top, then sprinkle the bits on top for the last 5 minutes of baking. Very tasty.

I changed it up a bit. Added 5 extra strips of chopped turkey bacon in the mix itself. Used 1/2 cup brown sugar, and omitted the salt. I also substituted McIntosh apples for Granny's (peeled, cored and diced. Even though I added the bacon to the mix, I still layered 5 strip on top. When I uncovered it, I left it in the oven for about 45 minutes to crisp up the bacon a bit more. It was fantastic! I took it to a ladies movie soiree and everyone loved it...even my picky 2 year old. :

Yum! My family loved these beans. Even my four year who has sworn off all beans. I used a can of great northern beans and added just a little bit of ketchup and maple syrup to the mix.

I did this in a crock pot, probably the best side dish I have ever made.

deeeelish! this recipe has been a HIT at many a bbq and gathering. I double the apples but cut in small pieces. I also double and fry the bacon and crumble into the mixture instead of on top, that way everyone gets some bacon : depending on the humidity, i cook longer uncovered and all is well.

It was very good, but I used to make Apple Baked beans that had Cinnamon in them. Also, I read reviews about apples not being done enough, so I saute'd apples and onion in 2T. butter, added the Brown sugar and 1 T. Cinnamon to this recipe and it was a KNOCK OUT! Everyone at family reunion loved it!! Wanted recipe...and of course I had to give them the revised rendition. Paulas beans were a 4-ish...but according to reviews at Reunion, mine were a 5 STAR. LOL.

I made this for a family cookout on the 4th. It tasted good but the apples were undercooked and it was too soupy. The next day I added a small can of baked beans to what was left and baked it at 275 degrees for 30 minutes and it was perfect.

When I watched the video I noticed that Paula did not cover the beans before putting them in the oven and so neither did I. The consistency was perfect. She also cut the bacon into bite size pieces for easier serving. These beans were so good that my mother passed the baked bean duties to me from now on. Even my extremely picky daughter loved them.
