Here is the trick for good pie texture

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
If your apple butter and fresh pumpkin are a little too runny put each one in cheescloth and set in a strainer. Let excess water drain out. I let mine drain overnight. This will improve the quality of the pie texture considerably. Remember it will reduce the amount of the ingredient so use more in the cheesecloth to compensate.

Not a hit at my house

Rated: 2 stars out of 5
I do make a lot of Paula Deen recipes. Some I like and some I do not. This one was not a good one. I offered this to everyone and they just stuck their nose up at it. I have made much better pies than this. A regular pumpkin pie recipe such as the famous "Libby's" is much better. I do a lot of baking for people and let them taste this and it was not a hit. Also, it does need to go into a deep dish pie shell. I'm not saying it was a disaster just not a hit.

Great flavor, took longer to cook

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
I made this cake yesterday for a holiday gathering. It was really good, I am not a big fan of pumpkin pie and I liked the twist on this one. I followed the suggestion using 1/2 cup of apple butter. I also used fresh pumpkin, I had a little more than a cup, so I went ahead and used it since I had used less apple butter. The flavor was great, the consistency not so much, it was a bit mushy. The instructions said to cook for 40 min, I cooked for 1 hr and I should have left it longer. Any suggestions? Should I cook longer or should I add an egg or something to improve the consistency? I will be making this again :)

I make this once a year whenever I have my yearly turkey dinner. It is always a hit and it goes quick. I would recommend making this with fresh pumpkin it is much better then the canned. :)

    Can you say Butter!?

Not for the lactose intolerant, this recipe is soooo good. Should we expect anything else from Mrs. Paula? My daughter loved these cookies so much we made them two weekends in a row. If you like apples, butter, pumpkin and spice, these cookies are the jam.

    A Tangy Pumpkin Pie

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
I made this pie for Christmas dinner for the first time. I did read the other reviews and agreed that one cup of Apple Butter from the jar would make it too runny so I cut it in half and added an additional egg as well. I also switched out the sugar for a brown sugar Splenda blend and used the same amount. The pie was great. Excellent consistancy, the apple butter definitely gives it a tangy edge I liked. I also used a frozen pie shell instead of making if from scratch.

    Best Pumpkin Pie

I have made this recipe several times as it's so easy and delicious. My only recommendation is to use a deep dish pie crust as the ingredients will overflow in a regular size pie crust. Love ya Paula!

    Unbelievably Good

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I used a very thick apple butter and just cut back on the other spices a little bit as not to overwhelm the pie with too much cinnamon and nutmeg.. My pie came out very well and the only thing I might change is the texture. I would like it to be more like a custard. If anyone knows how to do that I would love to try it. Make it an apple butter custard pie!!! Yummy

My first attempt at pumpkin pie

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
I made this recipe the night before Thanksgiving but after reading the comments I cut the apple butter to 3/4 cup. The pie was beautiful when it cam out of the oven but by the next morning it had fallen and separated from the crust. Can anyone tell me how to prevent this in the future? The taste of the pie was delicious and I will try it again - maybe with a homemade crust.

    Decent

Rated: 3 stars out of 5
It came out just fine. The crowd I cooked for loves apple pie and they love pumpkin pie - but they really preferred the two be kept separate; I agree. The pie was a bit too rich and dense. The next day, the apple flavor was so strong and trumped the pumpkin flavor. Not a favorite.

Couldn't find apple butter - used Pumpkin butter

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
Unable to find apple butter, I used Pumpkin Butter (Trader Joe's). It was great. I used half a cup for each pie (I made two) and added allspice to the second pie. I also made my own vanilla whipped cream from a receipe found on this website. Was a hit with the whole family.

    This made Thanksgiving dinner!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I made a couple of little changes. I used a whole small jar of apple butter and then simmered it to 1 c. That made it thicker and more rich. I also used the whole can of pumpkin because I couldn't bring myself to throw out the itty bit that was left in the can. I covered the edges of the crust about 1/2 way through baking so it wouldn't burn. The pie was simply fantastic! Not too sweet and perfect with a cup of coffee.

Beware what "Apple Butter" you use

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
I'm glad I read some of these reviews before attempting to make this pie. I grew up in an Amish-heavy community, so we always had fresh apple butter available at our farmer's markets. The apple butter I purchased in the store was WAY more runny and less thick than the apple butter of my youth. Apple butter should be rather thick, almost the consistency of peanut butter. You should NOT be able to pour it out of a jar (like the store-bought stuff I had to deal with). Instead of making this pie w/ 1 cup apple butter, I made it with 1/2 c. and kept all the other ingredients the same. It turned out GREAT with that extra flavor, and I would recommend cutting back on the apple butter if it looks more runny than thick. I would also recommend only using 2 eggs if you are working with extra large eggs.

    Love It!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I tried this recipe about three or four years ago and my family loves it. Though I love pumpkin anything, the rest of my family isn't quite as enthusiastic as I am. So when I came accross this recipe, it sounded interesting. This will be my fourth year making it and everyone is looking forward to it. The apple pumpkin combo is a great representation of the harvest season's flavors that most people can enjoy. As a side note, I do put in just a touch less apple butter that the recipe calls for so that the pumpkin is a little more noticeable and so that the filling is a bit less runny. I would certainly recommend giving this one a try!
