I think this could be MUCH better if I follow one of the other rating suggestions for adding white sugar and more brown sugar. I especially didn't like the apple butter and cream cheese topping. I am going to throw that topping out and make just a regular cream cheese frosting and maybe sprinkle some brown sugar and left over toasted nuts on top. I used toasted pecans. I'm not a big fam of walnuts.

I made this recipe twice. The first time I made it I followed the recipe. It was not nearly sweet enough. The second time I used a 1/2 cup of brown sugar and 1 cup of white sugar. It was much better the second time.

I wish I would've read the reviews before baking. The bread is much dryer than I anticipated, and yes, it is not a real 'sweet' bread, but I don't think that's all bad. I may add a little extra sugar next time though. (I didn't have any raisins to add - this may make a differenc in the overall sweetness and texture.
It smells wonderful when baking, and made the house smell so warm and inviting on a cool day heading into Autumn.

Surely, the amount of sugar is a typo. Almost all tea type breads have at least 3/4 of a cup of sugar. Even taking into account the addition of applesauce the 1/4 cup is too little. I cant recall what Paula did on her show, but 1/4 cup is WAY too little. Especially, knowing Paula's tendancy for sweet and rich recipes.

I noticed several people felt this bread was not sweet enough. I have a similar recipe but it calls for an additional 1 cup white sugar. Maybe it was left out of the recipe. My recipe uses oil instead of butter and has 3T of milk and uses l 1/4c. of applesauce. That might account for the dryness and lack of sweetness. It is quite yummy with the additional sugar applesauce and milk.

If you like things sweet (like I do, triple the sugar! I doubled the sugar, and it still needed a bit more. I also would add a little more cinnamon, allspice; and dash a bit of nutmeg in it too. Also, I'm not sure if my oven was way too hot (I had used it to cook something else before this, but my bread did not need 65 minutes to cook. It was WELL done (almost overdone at 45 minutes. Thanks goodness I trust my sense of smell, or it would have been burnt. I would start watching it at 40 minutes, and stick a knife and/or toothpick in the center to tell if it is done. Overall, this recipe is good and a keeper.

The bread did not taste sweet to me. Next time I make it, I will sweeten it up a bit.
