Ingredients

Red Velvet Pound Cake:

Meringue:

Assembly:

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Grease and flour a 10-inch tube pan. Using a mixing bowl, combine the butter, shortening, and sugar and cream until light and fluffy. Add the eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Add in the food coloring and vanilla. Combine the flour and salt, and add to the creamed mixture alternating with the milk, beating well. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and bake for 1 hour and 20 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool the cake in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn it out onto a cooling rack.

Preheat the broiler.

To make the meringue, place egg whites and cream of tartar into a mixing bowl. Beat until soft peaks form. Gradually add the sugar and beat until stiff and set aside.

To assemble the Baked Alaska you have to work quickly. Slice the cake into 1/2-inch thick slices. Spread top of 1/2 of the cake slices with about 1 cup strawberry ice cream. Top with the remaining half of the cake slices. Place on a sheet pan. Spread meringue on all sides and form peaks using a knife. Broil until the meringue is light brown. Be careful not to burn peaks.

I 'HAVE' the original recipe released 2007(c.It's NOTHING like this. This is NOT a Red Velvet Cake it’s a YELLOW cake with lots of RED dye.Red Velvet Cake is made w/ Cocoa + Buttermilk; they interact & CREATE the RED color. Why cut the cake into 1/2" slices? ONLY covering 1/2 of the layers? Just slice at 1" & COAT ALL OF THEM.I love Paula.IF you're going to put a recipe on this website, make it properly.Best Baked Alaska I've EVER had was at John Ascuaga's Nugget in Sparks, NV at their Steak House.
They use a Swiss Meringue. They bring this glowing 'white' bombe out & pour 4 different liquors on it.With a dining room's dimmer lighting when they light the meringue this burst of flames come alive & wakes up the entire dining room.It had several different unusual wonderful Homemade Ice Creams inside.Been 20 years & I still think of it.I'd rather have that any day.
'joelglevi_2705599' most recipes have a difficulty rating listed. It's called try, try & try again. You WILL get it correct.

Miss.Paula, gosh,You have Two of My Favourites in this Divine recipe!Strawberry Ice Cream and Red Velvet Cake.I like Neopolitan Ice Cream too,so may use in place for Fun!I know it is a 'once in awhile' Dessert. But,oh Boy, is it not the Tastiest and Scrumptious combination of Flavours.
