Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds cubed round steak, cut into thin strips
  • House Seasoning, recipe follows
  • All-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 8 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 (10 3/4-ounce) can beef broth
  • 1 (10 3/4-ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • Cooked egg noodles

Directions

Season the steak strips with House Seasoning, then dust with flour. In a large skillet, quickly brown them on both sides in the olive oil and butter. Remove the steak from the pan. Add the onion slices and mushrooms to the pan drippings. Saute for a few minutes, until the onion is tender. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon flour. Put the steak back into the pan with the onion and mushrooms. Add the mushroom soup and beef broth. Cook over low heat for about 30 minutes, covered. Adjust seasoning to taste, adding salt and pepper, as needed. Stir in the sour cream the last few minutes, right before you serve. Serve over cooked noodles.

House Seasoning:

  • 1 cup salt
  • 1/4 cup black pepper
  • 1/4 cup garlic powder

Mix the ingredients together and store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

Yields: 1 1/2 cups

    a good standby

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
My husband and mom loved this dish (I'm veg myself so will have to take their word for it). It couldn't be easier to make,... and the sauce comes out with just the right consistency. I actually used (gasp) ground beef for mine instead of cubed meat because I don't like to fool with raw meat, and boiled 1/2 of a 12 oz. package of egg noodles and just added them to the pan, more like a one-dish meal or casserole, rather than ladle the sauce on top. Part of what makes this so easy is the cans of soup, but the dish seemed a bit too processed for my liking, I agree with reviewer Sandra's suggestion to make an authentic stroganoff and compare the two. I've never made beef stroganoff from scratch, but now I want to hunt down a good recipe and try that. Since everyone liked this one, however, it will stay in my recipe box.Read more

    Great Recipe

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
One of my boyfriend's favorite dishes is beef stroganoff. I wanted to try a different recipe than Hamburger Helpers version.... It was a big hit!!! This was easy to make and simply delicious!!! I think the way you cook the beef is what sends it over the top! He's always stealing bites of the meat before I put it back into the sauce. I make this dish about twice a month!Read more

    Great Hearty Dinner

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
This dish was hearty and easy. I think it could have used more of a kick, so next time I will add some paprika,... Worcestershire and red pepper flakes. We had leftovers so we froze them for about a week and the dish reheated great in the oven on low heat for about two hours. I also added some left over corn into the dish when it was done and it was a great addition! Read more

If you are a beginner cook...

Rated: 3 stars out of 5
If you are just starting out, I strongly suggest you make a more classic stroganoff to see what it is supposed to taste like,... before you try variations like Paula's. Hers is an inexpensive, family-friendly recipe, but using canned soup (not to mention ground beef) doesn't duplicate the dish, and will make it more difficult for you to create your own variations.
