I don't know if I went wrong somewhere with this recipe or what, but it turned out awfully dry and just not a good overall texture. I didn't make the filling that went with it, so that may have something to do with the dryness, but I have been pouring milk on every piece of this cake and still the texture is crumbly and dry. So I am currently just eating the frosting off the top. : The batter tasted pretty good, though!

Use SELF-RISING FLOUR and your CAKE WILL NOT BE DRY!!! This is what the recipes calls for. You will get a delicious cake if you follow the directions.

This cake is light and moist, I could have eaten the whole bowl of batter it was so fluffy! Wonder why some bakers had problems with dryness, the only change I made was to use 8 inch cake pans. I too thought the frosting was extremely sweet but this is a Paula Dean recipe. The caramel filling was terrific.

I made this cake for the first time for my roommate's birthday. It was way too sweet. I made it again with half the sugar in the cake. The frosting is sweet enough itself. With less sugar, the cake was much more enjoyable.

I read the reviews after I made the cake and dont know why anyones cake turned out crumbly or dry. My cake was very moist and good however next time I make this recipe i will omit a few things one the filling I would have preferred to use the frosting in the middle and when u used three pans they turn out kind of thin so would have only did 2 9-in pans. For the frosting itasted a little bit of grinding like from the sugar will have to figure out how to get sugar melted down more without burning it! Overall good recipe but you have to follow directions unless you are a avid baker. Adding ingrdients at the right time and mixing well in between makes a world of difference

This is one of the best cakes I have ever made.It made me think of maple sugar candy. My whole family loved it. This was given to me from my 12 year old grandaughter, Nicole who made the cake by herself and brought some over to my family. You can get a lot of pieces from this recipe because it is very rich and delicious. It is our favorite cake.
