My mother-in-law has made this cake for over 20 some years and passed it on to me. My cake is quite moist, however, I use a homemade icing and do a layer cake with the icing in between the layers and all over the outside of the cake. Have never tried the fudge sauce, but it souunds great. I have a question about the cake, the middle of mine seems to sink in, what would cause this?

FYI-Bakers German Chocolate isnt the only company who makes the chocolate required for this recipe. I buy two other brands at my local coop.Just google for it and then look for sources. My brands are much more luscious tasting. As for the cake-blah-can take or leave it. Many other recipes out there that are better. The sauce-YUM. So I gave it 3 stars-cut the difference. Love Paula tho!

For those who asked about the German chocolate bar, you will find it with the chocolate chips and baking chocolate in your baking aisle. It only comes in one size, 4 oz, and has a green wrapper. The brand is BAKER'S, in large letters across the top with the words German's sweet chololate bar underneath. It is not actually German chocolate but is named because a man whose last name was German developed it for Baker's. It is traditionally used in German chocolate cake. And of course, this recipe is everything you would expect from Paula!

We just made the fudge sauce for an ice cream topping and boiled it on a low flame for 10 minutes to thicken it a little more. WOW!!! IT WAS TO DIE FOR!!! But do stand there stirring the sauce the entire time, since it does bubble up.
As for the German Chocolate bar, add the entire box/bar of chocolate. I didn't have any unsweetened chocolate, so I used 1 square of semi-sweet chocolate instead. Scrumptious!

I am a chocolate addict. This was absolute heaven. And church is definitely where you need to go after eating this. It's so sinfully delicious and rich that you need to go to confession after eating this.

I haven't made this cake or the sauce I just caught the end of the show . So could anyone tell me how large the German choclate bar is and where would I find that? It really looked good though and got good reviews so I want to try it..
