This is the same "Butterscotch Brownie" recipe that's in my tattered old 1956 edition Betty Crocker cookbook with the exception of using walnuts (which I prefer rather than pecans. Paula, I hadn't made them in years and want to thank you for bringing these back into my recipe "repertoire". The only note I would mention would be to not overbake them. Of course, all ovens are different but I only baked mine for 12-15 minutes. They were wonderfully chewy but the next day had gotten a little too hard. Someone here suggested nuking them in the microwave for a few seconds and I'll try to remember that tip next time. Someone else mentioned them being hard to cut. I used my metal dough scraper and just pressed it into the cookies to cut them. (Another hint I saw on the Food Network. It was a breeze!

These are VERY easy to make and so chewy and delicious. My husband does not adore sweets like I do - but these were a winner with him. Friends at work loved them too!!

I made the chewies for my mother's 81st birthday dinner and everyone absolutely loved them & wanted the recipe. I had no problems what-so-ever. They cut perfectly & removed from the pan as perfect squares. I didn't have pecans on hand, so I used walnuts. Next time I think I'll double the recipe because they go so fast. And they do look pretty with the sprinkled sugar on top. This recipe is now a staple for me..one that I know is fast, easy & delicious.

I made these for my family and ended up wanting to hide them away for myself. Paula, these are a hit.

These reminded me of when I was a little girl. This recipe is very similar to a family recipe for "butterscotch brownies." As a kid I could never get enough. As an adult, I still can't get enough! As for Beth from Fresno, CA...not sure what recipe you were rating as this one did not call for either nutmeg or cinnamon. Try it without those ingedients and you might like them better.

These were definitely a hit with my family. I love how easy they are to make and how the recipe can be varied - by adding cinnamon, or chocolate chips, or oatmeal. I want to try them with almond flavoring instead of vanilla. I've made four batches in a week. Anyway, great sweet treat Paula. Thanks!
