My dad has been trying to find real butter pecan ice cream for nearly 20 years. It cannot be bought in the south. Imagine our surprise that the most southern of chefs created a perfect recipe for the real thing. Of course, Paula does know butter... We had to reduce this to fit in our ice cream maker, but that's okay. We'll just have to make it more often. Thanks Paula. What a perfect pre-Father's day find. His day has been made.

It was the worse ice cream ever! I know how to make all kinds of ice cream. I tried this one because it was easy and I didn't have to go to the store for the ingredients, Never again, Paula I love ya but ya missed the boat on this one......

Is that a typo in the recipe? 1 (3 3/4-ounce package instant French vanilla pudding mix. I could not find 3 3/4 ounce, only 3/4 ounce.

I made this recipe for a cookout at my Dad's. Butter Pecan ice cream is his favorite...and mine. I wanted to use a recipe that did not require eggs. The taste was great the way the recipe calls, but I needed more liquid to fill up my ice cream maker, so I added a quart of half and half and a can of sweetened condensed milk. The taste was excellent. I followed the instructions and the ice cream maker ran for a long time...kept adding more and more ice, but the ice cream would not set up. It was like some of the other comments said...ice milk. It had the consistancy of a melted milk shake. The flavor was really, really good. but I really wanted ice "cream". Why didn't it work??? I will have to find another recipe (that doesn't have eggs that will set right.

You can buy an ice cream maker at most department stores or kitchenware retailers. Kitchen-Aid has an attachment for about $60, and Cuisinart sells a popular model for about $40. Do a search and you'll see the huge variety. There are also hand cranked models that require the use of rock salt, or a ball that kids can roll around. Fun for the whole family.
Made some of this ice cream for my Pa for Father's Day. I like it, we'll see if he does too. :

Well I wasn't happy with the recipe. After looking at other's response, I feel the same about this being ice milk. I was thinking great, a easy recipe from Ms. Paula, as most everything else was good. Well I'm glad I tried this before the 4th of July. No I wouldn't serve this to my family. I'll have to search Paula's recipe for another.
