Ingredients
- Peanut oil, for frying
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup sugar
Icings:
- 2 cups confectioners' sugar, divided
- 5 tablespoons milk, divided
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 2 cans large buttermilk biscuits
- Colored sprinkles
- Chocolate sprinkles
Directions
Heat 2 inches peanut oil in a large pot or Dutch oven to 350 degrees F.
In a shallow bowl, stir together the ground cinnamon and sugar and set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 cup of confectioners' sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, set aside. This is the vanilla icing. In another bowl, whisk together 1 cup of confectioners' sugar, 1/4 cup of cocoa powder and 3 tablespoons of milk and set aside. This is the chocolate icing.
Lay out the biscuits on a cutting board and with a 1 1/2-inch round cookie or biscuit cutter, cut out a hole from the middle of each biscuit. Fry them in the oil until golden and then flip with tongs to fry the other side. You can even fry the donut holes. Drain on paper towels and then toss in the cinnamon-sugar or ice and decorate with sprinkles, as desired.

And we have a winner! I was craving donuts and all I could find without going to the grocery store was a $5 can of organic biscuits. Next time I'll go get a cheaper can. Either way, these are so good! I tried Alton's recipe a while ago and some of the donuts were a hit and some were a miss. Also, it was time consuming and messy. I just cracked open the can, cut them and put them in the oil. I know that you aren't suppose to use vegetable but it worked just fine. They were fantastic!!! Light and fluffy, but they still had some body to them. I topped some with a glaze, some with melted chocolate and nuts, and some with cinnamon sugar. I also put some with agave syrup for my diabetic father. I never expected donut making to be this easy. Will definitely be making again and again.

This recipe is delicious. I made them for the super bowl and they were a huge hit. EVERYONE loved them. My husband was eating them as they were coming out of the fryer. I had run him out of my kitchen in order to finish making the donuts. Which meant I had to send him off with a batch for himself. They couldn't get enough. I would have never thought that canned biscuits would make such good donuts, but they work perfectly. I will be making these again.
