This is a great and delicious recipe, but it most be the most sugar full desert that i have eaten. My friends and family have enjoyed this delicious, easy, and fun way of making a simple dish, yet have it taste so good.

The way Paula makes this on the video, and the way the recipe instructions are written, don't match.
The video shows the butter and brown sugar and nuts crumbled on top of the batter before baking, and she uses a store-bought caramel for the topping and heats it up to melt it. ( The store-bought caramel topping is not adressed in the written recipe . The brown sugar and butter are NOT melted for the topping in the video. Watch the video to see how its done.
Your results will be right, if you follow the video. :

Okay I must say I thought that this recipe would be easy but I was wrong. The "carmel" didn't really work it was really gritty... I stirred it forever and it never melted and it smelled burnt. Anyone know what I did wrong?

What happened? I read all the reviews, I tried it twice, and the topping looked so good and caramel-like. when it cooled though the brown sugar was gritty and dry. I creamed the butter and brown sugar, and dropped it by dollops on the uncooked brownie dough, then baked it. I even only used 3/4 cup brown sugar. Help! What did I do wrong?

I've recently become really interested in baking, using mostly recipes I see on Food Network or from the back of boxed mixes...so when i saw that this recipe was fairly simple I jumped at the chance to make it today for a coworker's birthday. I'm now currently baking another batch of brownies just normally. Next time I will def. read the reviews before trying something. I had mixed the carmel together with the butter in the saucepan and it crystalized all over the pan and I'm still working to clean it all up. The brownies smell burnt and I found myself pulling the caramel topping away trying to just eat the brownie. If I do try again, I will do it the way I hear she did it on the show.

These brownies are really yummy. I've made them several times. The trick is to make sure the sugar mixture is truly melted before you pour it over the brownie batter. It seems to take quite a while to get the sugar to melt. But it's worth it!

Paula, you've out done yourself on these. I've made these a couple times and people think I really worked hard on them. The topping takes so-so box brownies and turns them into home-town bakery goodies.

Break the butter into small pieces, and then mix it together with the pecans and brown sugar with your fingers or a fork to make a crumble topping. Sprinkle over the brownie batter once it's in the pan. Bake, and enjoy!
