Ingredients

  • Butter
  • 12 slices white bread
  • 8 large slices deli ham
  • 4 bananas, sliced on the bias
  • 2 cups shredded Cheddar
  • 2 cups crushed potato chips
  • 6 slices cooked and crumbled bacon
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup cream
  • Pinch freshly grated nutmeg
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Butter a 9 by 13 glass baking dish. Butter both sides of the bread and layer 6 of them into the bottom of the baking dish, overlapping them as necessary but keep them even. Layer the slices of ham on top of the bread and then the bananas, 6 more slices of bread, then the cheese, potato chips, and bacon. In a separate bowl, beat together the eggs, milk, cream, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Pour this over the casserole almost to the top. Bake for 45 minutes until brown and bubbly. Cut into squares and remove with a spatula, like lasagna.

Do you have to use potato chips for the topping. Can you use something else?

I love this casserole it's so good & so easy to make I love the sweet savory combination. I highly reccomend making this... casserole. I also highly reccomend that the people who gave this recipe a on or two star rating make this casserole since they've obivouisly never made this casserole before. But I know that when you make it and they make it you will all love it.Read more

    Yuck!

Rated: 1 stars out of 5
My neice saw this air on the show and called me to make it for her. I couldn't figure out why, but assumed if Paula made it... and it looked like a good idea, why not? I wish I had read the reviews first. My instincts were correct....this was a disgusting dish....the bananas give the whole thing a very weird flavor. Sorry, Paula....you did go bananas with this one!Read more

    Not my favorite

Though I love a lot of Paula's recipes and have used many of them time and again, I will not be making this one twice. ... Simply put, it was just weird. The bananas were a distraction really, and it was just not that good. Sorry, Paula. Read more

    Substitutions make it Mo'Better

Rated: 1 stars out of 5
Just watching the show made my arteries close shut. So, I made a bunch of substitutions and it came out mo' better! I used... skim milk, egg substitute, non-fat cheese, low-fat turkey bacon, and pineapple (no bananas). I left in the potato chips but cut that amount in half. No substitute for butter...not gonna happen....i already cut out all the other fat. Anyway, it was way mo' better... Mmmmmmmm....Read more

That was a five star meal

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
The sweet/savory flavor and fluffy, crispy texture is reminiscent of a monte cristo sandwich. We are not big ham fans, so we... substituted smoked turkey and added a dash of worchestershire sauce. This is very filing and delicious! It would be great as a brunch entree served with fresh fruit.Read more
