I first had this kind of barbecue brunswick stew at a restaurant called "Smokey Bones." It totally blew me away! Sort of like chili, but with a hint of barbecue. Well, after searching food network and the internet, it looked like Paula's recipe would be the closest to what I had. This recipe is good, but it needs some tweaking in my opinion to be better. I agree with one post that said it just tasted like chicken dunked in barbecue sauce. I think depending on the kind of barbecue sauce you use, will depend on how you have to tweak the recipe. I used Bullseye, which is pretty strong in flavor. I had to use a whole can of chicken broth to cut through the overwhelming barbecue flavor. I also added cayenne pepper for more kick. I think if I would have had a can of chilli beans, that would have been a nice addition also. I didn't use the full amount of sugar called for, but just a pinch. I think the chicken broth was the biggest helper in making this a better recipe. Not only did it enhance the flavor, but it thinned the broth out too, which I personally like a thinner broth.

Excellent. Served it with brown rice. My husband and I loved it. Would make a great dish to serve company. Very easy to fix.

I use a roasted chicken from the grocery, so this is a quick and tasty meal that is ready in seconds!
A big hit, but must be served with Paula's coleslaw.
I could eat a whole pot of it.

WOW! This dish is fantastic. I added extra chicken stock (about an extra 2 cups, 3 small potatoes (diced small, and adjusted my seasonings to accommodate the potatoes soaking a lot of the taste up. This dish would also been wonderful w/ smoked sausage added too. My husband said this reminds him of catfish stew but with chicken. Another true 'gem' Paula. Thanks for sharing your delicious dishes with all of us.

    Love ya girl.

Wow is this sweet! To sweet for me. I like the idea of a tomato based chicken stew, but this is just over the top in sweetness. It tastes like BBQ sauce with chicken in it. If I was going to make it again I would omit the sugar but I doubt if it will be a repeat at my table.

This was a great recipe for Brunswick stew. Being from GA I know brunswick stew, although it did need its fair share of salt and hotsauce to really make it stand-out

Fantastic meal. I used some leftover chicken from the day before and placed over egg noodles. WOW. Absolutely terrific.
