Ingredients
- 10 ounces finely chopped dark chocolate, divided
- Small balloons, filled with air
Directions
Grease a cookie sheet or line it with parchment paper.
Place 5 ounces of the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Stir until completely melted. Remove it from heat and stir in the remaining 5 ounces chocolate until thoroughly smooth. Spoon 1/2 teaspoon melted chocolate onto prepared pan to form a small disk. Dip the balloon into the disk of chocolate, coating about a third of the balloon. Place the dipped end of the balloon on the chocolate disk. Repeat with remaining chocolate and balloons. Place in the refrigerator to set, about 30 minutes.
In order to release the air from the balloon, pinch the balloon just under the knot and cut a small hole in the surface between fingers and knot. Very gradually release air; if air is released too quickly, the bowls may break. Carefully peel the deflated balloons from the chocolate bowls.

I made these chocolate bowls today for my cousins baby shower. I'm using this as treat bowls that I'm filling with home made truffles (recipe from Alton Brown. At first after reading the reviews here, I became real hesitant to try these. So I searched up on line to get ideas from other people who might've tried this and found several helpful reviews on how to get a good result. I used water balloons, instead of the heavy duty kind. First I tried to dip in chocolate about five minutes after taking it off the stove, but the balloon popped. It did not make a mess like the other reviews indicated, nor did it splatter me. After a total of about 25 mins the chocolate had cooled, I tried my balloons again and it worked perfectly! I made in small batches to do 6 balloons each time, so the chocolate would cool quickly. Then I took them out and made small holes on the top to let the air out slowly, and then put them in the freezer. It came out perfect and I loved the results:!!

I love making chocolate bowls! Well, when you are about to dip the balloons into the chocolate, make sure that the chocolate is cool. Hot chocolate will definitely pop the balloons. After double-boiling the chocolate, let it cool a little. Just make sure you don't set it. The chocolate should cool down a little and then dip the balloons.

i can relate to the mess and the burns. i was only able to successfully make 2 bowls, which i couldn't get the balloons out of after they set, so that equals no bowls. i only have myself to blame for the insane behavior of continuing to keep trying when balloon after balloon after balloon popped sending molten chocolate everywhere in my kitchen and all over me! did anyone happen to notice on the show that paula herself did not successfully make one of these...her balloon popped and she went right to the already completed ones...so someone must know the trick...let us in on it please!
