I made these chocolate bowls today for my cousins baby shower. I'm using this as treat bowls that I'm filling with home made truffles (recipe from Alton Brown. At first after reading the reviews here, I became real hesitant to try these. So I searched up on line to get ideas from other people who might've tried this and found several helpful reviews on how to get a good result. I used water balloons, instead of the heavy duty kind. First I tried to dip in chocolate about five minutes after taking it off the stove, but the balloon popped. It did not make a mess like the other reviews indicated, nor did it splatter me. After a total of about 25 mins the chocolate had cooled, I tried my balloons again and it worked perfectly! I made in small batches to do 6 balloons each time, so the chocolate would cool quickly. Then I took them out and made small holes on the top to let the air out slowly, and then put them in the freezer. It came out perfect and I loved the results:!!

I love making chocolate bowls! Well, when you are about to dip the balloons into the chocolate, make sure that the chocolate is cool. Hot chocolate will definitely pop the balloons. After double-boiling the chocolate, let it cool a little. Just make sure you don't set it. The chocolate should cool down a little and then dip the balloons.

i can relate to the mess and the burns. i was only able to successfully make 2 bowls, which i couldn't get the balloons out of after they set, so that equals no bowls. i only have myself to blame for the insane behavior of continuing to keep trying when balloon after balloon after balloon popped sending molten chocolate everywhere in my kitchen and all over me! did anyone happen to notice on the show that paula herself did not successfully make one of these...her balloon popped and she went right to the already completed ones...so someone must know the trick...let us in on it please!

I followed Paula's recipe and my chocolate bowls turned out perfect! When I took them from the frig and popped the balloons.. the balloons did stick to the chocolate. Once the bowls are out of the frig for 5 to 10 minutes they began to sweat, this is when the balloons simply slid right out. Be patient and you will be rewarded! I put the bowls back into the frig until I was ready to fill and serve. I will be using this recipe again!

When we poped the balloons the chocolate just stuck to them. For those of you who got this to work can you let me know what we did wrong? Do you need to spray the balloons with nonstick first? We used good bitter sweet chocolate and regular balloons, all we could find at the time. For those of you who think this is great family fun to have with the kids, I would question your sanity after reading input from the burn victims.

My sister is a great and experienced cook, and is still recovering from the burns she received after the high quality balloon she used exploded, covering her and her entire kitchen and dining room with speckles of molten chocolate (ceiling included!. The inside of her eye was burned and she was sure she would get a blister. She was just glad the kids were not in the kitchen with her.

A word of warning needs to be put in here... I attempted to make the balloons, and one of them exploded while setting after being dunked in the chocolate... melted chocolate covered me, my kitchen walls, roof, blinds, etc... I was almost blinded by melting chocolate shrapnel...

This was with a high quality balloon, that was barely blown up at all, in chocolate that was only warm...

Using a mold, or painting plastic wrap lined bowls as molds, works much better and is safer. I WOULD NOT reccommend doing this with kids, due to the shrapnel factor...
