I made this bread pudding for my husband's birthday since he loves chocolate but does not like cake. Everyone loved it-- I only put 1/2 tsp of the almond extract 1/3 cup of whipping cream and I added two tablespoons of the coffe liquor. Also instead of the semi-sweet plain chocolate I used semi-sweet chocolate with hazelnuts mixed in. I also made a whipped topping and added some coffee liquor (kahlua to it for the topping which was great. I am going to try this recipe with croissants next time (maybe even chocolate ones.

I made this for my fiance' and his father. The compliments have not stopped. I substituted chocolate liquer for the coffee, turned out great. They ate it in three servings!

I have not made this recipe yet, but I intend to with just a few modifications. I read all the reviews--some calling it moist and decadent, and others dry and flavorless. I think it has to do with the bread. When they say 1 pound, you need to weigh it and at least be in the ballpark. Also, fresher bread would soak up less custard, leaving a "gooier" finished product. Day-old or stale bread would yield a dryer product. I think that you should make the custard and then add the bread a bit at a time until it is the perfect consistency for you. You could also make extra custard.

I didn't use the almond extract because I don't like the flavor. It was delicious!

Two teaspoons of almond extract is too overpowering. Recipe is ok, but no wow factor. I may try it again with only 1/2 tsp of the almond - or eliminate it all together. This recipe is not real sweet, which is a good thing. I used splenda brown sugar mix and just under one cup of sugar.
