Ingredients

  • 1 (18 1/2-ounce) package devil's food chocolate cake mix
  • 3 (3 1/2-ounce) packages instant chocolate pudding mix, regular or sugar free
  • 2 cups whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
  • Chocolate sauce or syrup, any variety, for garnish
  • 1 cup chopped pecans, lightly toasted

Directions

Prepare the cake mix according to package directions and bake in a 13 by 9-inch pan. Let it cool thoroughly, then cut the cake into cubes about the size of walnuts.

Prepare the chocolate pudding according to package directions.

In a medium bowl, whip the cream with the sugar until stiff.

To assemble: In a trifle bowl, layer half the chocolate cake cubes, pudding, whipped cream, chocolate sauce or syrup and nuts. Repeat, layering the remaining ingredients, ending with whipped cream and nuts. Drizzle decoratively with chocolate sauce or syrup.

Add more whipped cream. To save fat/calories I used fat free whipped cream and then skim milk in the pudding. To save... money, I used walnuts instead of pecans. Fantastic. Read more

    Super Delicious

I tried this over the weekend and it was a big hit. I was worried that it would be tooooo sweet, but it was just perfect.... Even my husband liked it and asked for seconds, and he's not into chocolate desserts. The kids raved about it! I served it with fresh strawberries. Easy and inexpensive! Thanks Paula!Read more

    Made this with leftover cake!

I made this trifle with a leftover birthday cake, it worked really well. Replaced the whipped cream with cool whip because... only thing we had on hand, and replaced pecans with walnuts.. which I prefer. The cake already had been frosted so I omitted the chocolate fudge sauce. Big hit! :)Read more

    What a hit!

My Mom is in a nursing home and two of my friends, who also have parents there, and I made lunch for their caregivers today.... I honestly think that someone cleaned out the trifle bowl with their finger. This is a great, easy recipe. I will definitely be using again. Thanks Paula for a delicious dessert that was so easy to make. (and yes, homemade whipped cream is so much better - you have made a believer out of me). Read more

You can't mess this up if you tried!

I made this for my dinner guest tonight and she loved it! I thought it was going to be too sweet but it was surprisingly... light. A nice change of pace when you're sick of the typical pound cake with fruit triffle. Next time, I'm going to change it up by using different flavors of cake mix and pudding. (Like chocolate fudge cake with peppermint pudding and crush up peppermint chocolate candies in there.) The possibilities are endless.....go crazy y'all!Read more
