This was a family reunion must have on my dad's side. Then my mom got a hold of it and, genius that she is, made a vanilla version to put over waffles with fresh berries as well. Don't shoot me Paula, but I have a SUPER easy version of this that I work up in the microwave. I'm one of the baddies that measure everything by eye, so these might be a little off. 1 cup sugar, 3-4 Tbs corn starch, 4 Tbs coco powder, pinch of salt...mix it up in a microwave safe bowl. Slowly mix in about 3 cups of milk (I use whatever kind I have on hand, usually 1 or 2% also add about 1 tsp vanilla and 1 egg. Toss it in the microwave for about 5 minutes on high then whisk it like crazy. Give it another 3 minutes on high and beat it again. After that it will be thickening so just do it for another 1 minute at a time until it's as thick as you like it. For the vanilla version, just leave out the coco. Crazy easy right? I'm making it about once a week for my family.

My family is from Arkansas; us kids were born there but moved West when we were little. Everytime we returned for visits my Aunt always made Chocolate Gravy for us. She never used water in hers, always whole milk and sometimes a little heavy cream for added richness. Can anybody say AWESOME? !!!!!

Delicious!!! I didn't experience chocolate gravy until I was in my early 20's when a good friend of mine fixed it for me. I had a huge craving for it this past week and sought out the recipe. Seeing Paula Deen had a recipe I knew it was a must try. My teenage boys had never heard of it and were very skeptical when they found out what I was making. Needless to say it was a hit! They loved it! I found that I slowly had to add a little more flour than the recipe called for in order to get it to thicken up. This will be a family favorite from now on!

I must have done something wrong with the biscuits. The biscuits were good while they were hot, but when they got cold or warm they became hard. That is to be expected when you have a family of 7 like I do. The gravy had to much chocolate. I will reduce the amount of cocoa from 1/3 cup to 2 tbsp. Otherwise the gravy was perfect! Thank you Mrs. Paula Deen.

Growing up, we called this soppin chocolate. We would have this with what we call side meat. My grandma made is all the time. Especially on Sunday nights..........loved that I found a very close match to it. Wouldn't you know that it would be from another southern gal, Paula Dean!!!

Let me tell you...I grew up eating Chocolate Gravy too! My grandmother used to make it for me everytime I would visit. My aunts would make it and my mother as well. I always thought it was just our family recipe because everytime I ever told anyone about it or asked if they tried it, they would say "what, chocolate gravy, eww." They just don't understand what they were missing! A GREAT THING TO ADD TO THIS WHILE EATING....BRACE YOURSELVES....A SPOON FULL OF PEANUT BUTTER and A TOUCH OF BUTTER. So Creamy and good! That's for all you who love the mixture of chocolate and peanut butter that is...and believe me it will put your tummy in a good mood. Makes you full real quick! I introduced my kids to Chocolate Gravy and maybe one day they will pass down the tradition. GREAT TO KNOW OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCES AS I GROWING UP ON CHOCOLATE GRAVY!!
Best regards,
Keasha Garrett
P.S. Don't forget the PEANUT BUTTER!!

I love Chocolate gravy with biscuits, I grew up eating it for breakfast here in Northern Alabama it is a staple, your recipe is what we all use, some use milk and others water. Thanks for sharing it with the world. Just break them biscuits up in your plate, pour the gravy over and add some butter, yum.

I wonder if this is just a Southern Dish? I am also from Arkansas and we grew up eating this for breakfast. I like mine slightly thick and toss a few pats of butter on my plate to boot. None of my friends have ever heard of this and when I made it they were suprised. Its just nothing more than "Southern Love"!
