I made this cake for Christmas and it was very good. I also used a box cake mix like the other reviewers. The filling was not gritty at all. It was very smooth and delicious. The frosting was delicious as well. A bit on the sweet side, but good none the less. The chopped pecans gave it just that little something that made it worth all the work..

This cake was fantastic! I made it for friends, and they ate almost the whole thing after dinner! I used a chocolate box cake, then did everything else as directed (to save myself time. The cake was moist and delicious! I will definitely be making this one again!

This was incredible, first I have to say that I only gave it 4 stars because of the other reviews about the cake being dry so I just used a box mix cake then followed the rest of the directions. It was fantastic, not a drop left over. The caramel sauce was not gritty at all, however you need to understand the basics of candy making to avoid that texture. When making a caramel sauce you can't just melt the butter and mix the sugar and cream in, you need to boil it for a few minutes at a rapid boil. that way the ingredients can actually combine and become a smooth creamy caramel, which is exactly what mine did. It's about to a soft ball stage. Then topped it with some crushed candied pecans,,,,,,heavenly

I have been baking my whole life and have made many many cakes. This one was very dry and cracked into several pieces while attempting to ice it. It was horrible. Sorry Paula is my favorite but this recipe needs something else to make it more moist and hold together!

My mom made this for my birthday and it was great! I can't comment on the cake portion, because she used a cake mix, but the caramel and frosting were outstanding! She added some coconut to the top and it was even better!

First of all, let me say that I usually love Paula's recipes, but I think that this one needs to be revisited. The cake was extremely dry. I think that the recipe should have included sour cream or buttermilk to make it more moist. I read some of the reviews that indicated that the cake was dry, so I put some simple syrup on it and it was still dry. As other reviewers have said, the carmel sauce was very grainy. When I poured the sauce on the top layer, the cake cracked so badly that I had to cut it into pieces and put it in a casserole dish before adding the frosting and pecans. It had all the components for a great recipe, but it missed the mark.

This cake was awesome! Super moist and very rich! I roasted my pecans before putting them on the cake, and that added such a great flavor. This is an awesome recipe!

The filling and icing are good. Using brown sugar, I expected them to be every so slightly grainy, just like my grandmothers when I was a kid. Used a whole lot of chopped pecans, just my preference. I took a short cut and used my favorite boxed devils food cake mix. Over all, it was easy and a terrific cake. Making it again to take for a pot luck dinner.

There was a nice balance between bites with one having the richness of the chocolate cake and the next the sweetness of the frosting, which was more like a glaze. You definatly need a big glass of milk with this one.
