I haven't made this cake yet but planning to tonight. Sharon, I think your frosting may have been too sweet because you used the wrong milk. Did you use sweetened condensed milk, or evaporated milk? The former is thick, very sweet and almost has to be spooned out of the can. The latter pours like milk.

A very simple and delicious cake. I liked it because it used butter instead of oil, so it had a better taste. I served this at a lunch party with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and the guests raved!! Highly recommended.

The cake was easy to make and easy to cleanup but the frosting was TOO sweet. Perhaps less sugar? or no sugar since the evaporated milk and chocolate chips already have sugar as one of their ingredients? I'd try it at least 1x again but change the frosting.

It is truly amazing how many of Paula's recipes I have. So many of them I first got in the early 1970's and have continued to make to this day. This choclate cake, the gooey butter cake, all from "church" and "community" cookbooks that are so worn with all their use! his cake is one of the easiest and most delicious!

I've baked many recipes for chocolate cake and this one is my favorite. Absolutly wonderful. I only used 3/4 Cup sugar and I also used almonds in the icing. I ate 2 large pieces and I'm on a diet. Shame on me. I couldn't resist it once I saw her make it on TV. FABULOUS.

I am a true dark rich chocolate lover so I was suspect of this cake, having chocolate syrup as the chocolate ingredient, however, the ratings were so fantastic so I thought I would try it and I was very disappointed. I followed the recipe to the T and it is so sweet and the texture is like a sponge. Not a great cake in my estimation and I have made many delicious chocolate cakes.
