This turned out pretty good. I added several extra ingredients based on other reviews such as garlic to the potatos and the meat mixture. I also added Worcestershire sauce and beef boullion cubes as well as my house seasoning and onion soup mix. The one thing I added to the box cornbread mix was a egg. I will NOT do that again. It took forever to cook and I had to break the topping up. I think it was the egg. I will try it again without the egg. The kids thought it was ok but they are not used to eating things like this. The kids are picky eaters! I will make it again.

after reading the reviews, i made some changes. I used 8 oz tomato sauce, 14 oz diced tomatoes drained. I also added beef boullion cubes with a little water, little worchestershire sauce, some basil, and chili powder. I did put a sprinkle of asiago cheese after the meat mixture before the cornbread mix. My husband says it is good and flavorful.

This was such a wonderful dish. I also added the Worcestershire sauce as subjected w minced onion and garlic included in the meat, before veggie were put in. And I did not use the ramekins since I was transporting it. I put the meal in a 13 x 9 x 2 foil pan. and I made more cornbread topping for it, and baked it longer to make sure it cook through. I just put foil on top so it wouldn't burn while it finished baking. I'm telling you, this was loved my all, and I didn't have to wait for Xmas.Thank you Paula.

I added worcetshire to the tomato sauce before adding it to the beef. It added a nice flavor. I'd recommend 2-3 teaspoons. Also added a clove of garlic to the mashed potatoes while boiling, and another 3 cloves (presses on the beef.

Substituting cauliflower for potatoes is a healthy alternative and it tastes the same. I did 4 potatoes and a half head of cauliflower. I think you could easily do half potato and half caul.

Also, Jiffy cornbread comes in 8.5 ox box, which wasn't quite enough to cover the top of the dish.

It was great. I didnt have any tomato sauce so i used tomato soup w/ sugar added. Oh and instead of the mixed veggies i just used corn. It was soooo good. No leftovers though. Wish there was.. me and my husband ate it all.

I made this last night after reading the reviews I made a few adjustments, and by far this was the best Shepard/Cottage Pie I have ever eaten. The next day leftovers were even better then the first. I agree with other people it was kind of bland so I just added my own spices and fresh herbs to the ground beef mixture. I made the potatoes just how Paula did but without a half stick of butter, used four tablespoons and that was sufficent. Next time I will add a bit of garlic while boiling the potatoes to give it more of a balance. Im not sure if the tomato sauce is what soaks up the spices and makes it bland, you should add it bit more during the cooking process because it tones down. I used Marie Callenders Corn Bread mix for the sweetness. It is a little runny but no worries it bakes up beautifully! The best part of this dish was day two, all those spices just melded together and was so yummy and full of goodness!!!. Paula I have not been disapointed yet with your cooking!!Keep up the amazing work!!

The cornbread topping really made this dish delicious! I'm not a very good cook but it was simple and quick to make. WAY better than the traditional Shepherds Pie!

I've been planning to make this since I found it at the beginning of December. Finally made it today. Let me start off by saying the "Shepard's Pie" that I grew up on is not a traditional Irish or English recipe, . My family's version was ground beef, covered by corn, covered by mashed potatoes and then baked. I read the reviews, found the concept of the mashers on the bottom, tomato sauce in my ground beef and using peas & carrots in addition to corn very intriguing. In my book, anything topped with corn bread can't be THAT bad, so I decided to give it try.... Followed the recipe a listed, but agree with several other reviewers because we found it to be missing "something". Cannot put my finger on what it is lacking. I added a little more salt and fresh ground pepper to my plate and that wasn't it. Maybe I'll add some basil or rosemary to the ground beef the next time. If there is a next time. I'd love to know what others used as that "missing" ingredient. I don't like oregano, so I won't try that... I guess I'll try it one more time. Disappointed...
