OK, you better LOVE coconut cream pies or coconut cream based drinks for this one! Ok....but I will not put on my rotation list. I like coconut, but for me it was just to much. It was quick and easy to throw together, but maybe I'll save this one for a crowd when we have more coconut lover's at our house. I did make the chocolate, and I think you need it to cut the sweetness.

OMG!!!!!! I pray Paula Dean reads this post, she probably won't, but OMG! I saw this on her show the other day and wanted to test this out for my big family Christmas Eve dinner. I had no problem finding the coconut milk and cream of coconut - Goya in with the ethnic foods. My can of cream of coconut was a 15oz, and I used all but maybe 1 tablespoon. I think that may have been the difference with sweetness people had issues with. Mine turned out phenomenal and the sweetness was perfect! I did add a little extra bread, so it was not as custardy as it could have been. I always use more spices than it says to use, just my way of baking. I probably had at least 2 tsp of nutmeg and at least 1/2 tsp of mace. I found an inexpensive mace in the store and it was great. I cannot wait to make this for my family at Christmas time. PAULA..... THANK YOU! BIG WINNER!!!!

I didnt have Mace, just used a little extra nutmeg as a poster said below...worked just fine.
We originally served it warm with hot fudge sauce (didnt make the recipe sauce and it was amazing.
Tried it cold today..EVEN BETTER!!! Definately making this again!

Yummy tasting, but the mace was almost $5. dollars for a small bottle, so I don't think you need to buy it just for a pinch of it. My store didn't know where the cream of coconut was so I wish I would have taken the time to read the reviews before I went to the first store. It was with the alcohol mixers for pina coladas. The recipe should have stated where to find that. Although it taste a lot like sweetened condensed milk but with coconut flavoring. It doesn't need sugar like some people said, as long as you do the recipe right and get the cream of coconut. I don't like too much flaked coconut though so I only added a little. Takes too long to chew. If you make it right you will love this recipe.

This is awesome! My favorite dessert. It was very sweet and could only eat a little bowl but it was amazing. I love all things coconut.

Wonderful! Very, very delicious. I didn't make the chocolate sauce, it was perfect all on it's own.

I made this yesterday for a 4th of July cookout -- it was a hit!! Everyone just loved it. I couldn't find cream of coconut so I ended up using another can of coconut milk. After tasting the mixture I added about a cup of sugar to sweeten it up. I left out the mace and added a little more nutmet than this recipe called for. This bread pudding baked perfectly and looked great too! I didn't make the chocolate sauce and used sweetened whipped cream to dollop on each individual serving.

I will definitely make this one again, and thanks to the other reviewers comments I now know where to find cream of coconut in the grocery store!
