This is one of the very BEST mac & cheese recipes I have tried. I make it often for my family, and it disappears quickly! Yummy!

I use mild cheddar instead of sharp for the kiddos. I also mix the sauce over medium heat, starting with the butter and cheddar. Vigorous stirring makes the mixture smoother, and then it melts easily into the soup and sour cream. It's delicious!

Made this for Thanksgiving and found it to be too clumps. Adding additional milk helped, but I'd rather just go back to baked kind.

I doubled the recipe (I have a large crock pot, and made this for a party. It would have been much better if I had only cooked it in the crock pot for about half the time and then switched to warm. It was still awesome, but it had gotten a little grainy. Maybe my crock pot is just hotter than others, but 3 hours was too long. I would suggest checking it at an hour and a half. If it's hot and creamy, turn it off/warm. This was awesome for a party and I will definitely make again!

I cooked this Macaroni and Cheese for Thanksgiving this year 2011 and my family loved it. They said it was the best mac and cheese I ever made. It was awesome. Thanks Paula for sharing this wonderful mac and cheese. I will truly make this again and I have been telling all of my friends and loved ones about this wonderful way to make mac and cheese. Using this recipe allowed me to have more time to prepare other items for the holiday and not feel over whelmed by everything there is to do. I just set it and forgot it. I also used the egg and it wasn't gritty or anything it was perfect!. Loving it.

THIS IS THE ONLY MAC & CHEESE I WILL MAKE FROM NOW ON!! I did not change anything in this recipe, except used 2% milk as I had no Milnot, and changed time to 90 minutes. I have made other mac & cheese recipes that required many more ingredients (Velveeta, cream cheese, cheese wiz, onion, green pepper, but this mac & cheese was the best and so easy to make and less expensive. I stirred frequently and turned the crock pot down to "warm" when I thought it look ready. Once again, Paula Dean, thank you so much for sharing your great recipes!! WE LOVE YOU!!

This was the basis for my crock pot. Read all the reviews and combined this recipe with the Alton Brown recipe.
Made it for the first time for Thanksgiving.
Inital thought:TOOOOOOO buttery. I would have added less butter when cooking the cheese. I used 1 egg instead, put 1 cup milk and 1 cup of heavy whipping cream, added an extra layer of cheese mixed in with panko breadcrumbs.
Wasn't sure how long to cook it. Only cooked the past for about 5 minutes before transferring over. I put it on LOW for 1 hour (upon reading every one else's responses. I should have put it on HIGH for an hour or changed it to HIGH for about an hour after it was low.
Didn't turn out fabulous, but it was almost all gone. I'd make it again with a few more minor tweaks.
