LisaBird: Sugar is added -as needed- to balance the acidity of the tomatoes & bring out their sweetness. It's not just a southern thing... unless you're referring to southern Italy.
And if you used Ragu, you DID have added sugar. (check the label
Great recipe. The variety of meats is interesting. Sweet Italian sausage would be nice as a substitute for one of the meats!

This was delicious. We used ground Italian sausage for the pork and just ground turkey, the sauce turned out perfect and the whole dish was superb. The leftovers reheated in the microwave perfectly.

I admit I was a little sceptical about using the ground pork, chicken & turkey but it was wonderful! It wasn't dry like some baked spaghetti I have tried. I will be making this again. Thanks, Dora for a great recipe!

This was very good as written. I added 2 links of hot sausage to the sauce to be served on the side.

I am not a fan of spaghetti; however my husband can't seem to get enough of it. I made this for his birthday dinner and he absolutely loved it. It wasn't hard to make, just a little time consuming, but it's all worth it. There is a reason to let things simmer and blend together. I even enjoyed this spaghetti. Thanks Paula for an enjoyable recipe!

love this!! i actually brown my meat, lean ground chuck, with all veggies. drain off fat, then add all the rest of the sauce ingredients. simmer for a good while, it will reduce some. be sure and remove the bays leaves before you start to assemble the casserole. makes alot, can be frozen. my family and friends love it!! whoever says this has no flavor must not have followed the recipe. love you paula!! always watch and have most of your cookbooks, also, one of your cast iron pots and skillets, your wooden spoons, etc. i am a fan!!
