... I'm 26 and my mom has been making these my entire life.. So this is DEF not a new recipe, but it is amazing and is a people-pleaser for sure. Everybody loves it, and its usually the first to go on a holiday cookie platter. My boyfriend HATES coconut, and after some convincing I got him to try it, and even he liked it :

I don't think Paula was trying to take credit for making this as an original recipe... So, to those of you who were offended, chill out... lol.... Cripes! This recipe is on the can of sweetened condensed milk, and there is even a boxed version you buy and just put it all together to throw in the oven.

I like the idea someone else had to omit the nuts, and add mini marshmellows... Next time I make these, I think I'll try that.

Is there anything I can do to cut-down some of the richness of this wonderful desert? I think it may be the butterscotch morsels.

i have been making this recipe for years,,,mine is a little different though. I don't add the butterscotch chips and i also put my condensed milk over the crumbs instead of on the top..Love you Paula Deen. I have several of your cook books the only ones i don't have are your first two and the are not easy to find in my area..Could you please let me know where i can get them.. You are the best. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

This is not a new recipe. I've been making the same bar for YEARS. My printed recipe is "7 layer bar" I've also added butterscotch chips.

Yummy & easy. Those are the kinda recipes I like. Instead of graham crackers, I used nilla wafers. I did the crust part, then the kids did the rest. This is a fun recipe to get them involved in. Then 30 minutes later, we were enjoying this (very sweet treat together.

The jar of 5 layer mix, is being referred to as the first 5 ingredients. She had this created as a gift in a jar. If you follow the instruction it tells you how to layer it in a jar if you want to give it as a gift. You attach a tag with the amount of butter and the condensed millk so the recipient knows how to make it. In your case, just omit putting it in a jar. I have a recipe similiar to this called a 7-layer bar which is awesome also.

My 7 yr. old son helped by crushing the graham crackers and my 18 yr. old daughter added all the ingredients! I can only take the credit of placing it in the oven :o. Yummy!

    A wonderful recipe!

To those of you who freaked out the minute Paula made this recipe on her show, you need to take something to calm down. Maybe try a little yoga, see a therapist or try some anti-anxiety medication....something....seriously. It's not that big of a deal. I think all of you who made accusations of Paula trying to claim that she came up with this recipe all on her own, need to grow up and get a life. I thank God she had this recipe on this website because I lost my original recipe that I haven't made in 5 years or so and I looked it up on foodnetwork.com hoping to find it and I did. I really didn't want to have to get out and go to the grocery store and get the recipe off the evaporated milk can. This is a wonderful dessert that I'm going to bring to a Christmas party this year.
