made a couple mistakes. I needed to cut the onions into smaller sizes. it was almost like you were eating spaghetti. I found that gruyere cheese in the market was awfully expensive. I bought a small size of smoked gruyere which was half the cost. It came out good. It tastes just like the smoked gouda I but frequently. I added nutmeg to the spices. I remember way back when I made an onion soup and it called for some nutmeg. It gives it a nice taste. I wonder if this would have come out better if I added a touch of sugar when the onions were almost cooked. Maybe next go around I will do that.

I made this for my Great Aunt and Mother-in-Law and they loved it as well as my husband and I. It was so delicious! I served it as a main course with a side salad and it was very filling and satisfying. I also used the swiss cheese and it melted perfectly and tasted great.

I LOVE soups, and French Onion has been an old-fashion favorite of mine. And I have to say, this one is a BIG score! I used beef bouillon (1/2 per each cup of water, and added 1 whole extra one. This way, I don't have to use salt. I also added a good pinch of Cayenne Pepper - and drank the rest of the wine bottle while savoring the soup. Ready in a few minutes and a true delight - Simple Goodness!

This soup was as good as I would get at my favorite french restaurant! Took longer than expected to cook down the onions, but they ended up being perfect. All I need is to buy some individual oven proof bowls...will make for a much prettier presentation.
Thanks Paula!!

This was my first time cooking french onion soup and it was delicious - the only mistake I made was not getting my onions browned enough.. but other than that it was easy! And a hit!

I made the recipe just as directed, except I don't have oven proof ramekins to broil the cheese on top. So, I melted it on the toasted bread. I've never made French onion soup, but I would do this one again. It was easy and excellent! Thanks Paula!
