I can't believe I've been making fried green tomatoes for years without Vidalia Onion Relish!! It's the perfect accompaniment and just makes the tomatoes sing. I will never fry a tomato again with out placing this relish on top. Sooooo yummy. Thanks Paula!

Paula, I tried the salt on the tomatoes before battering them, the water really came out, I was really surprised. But when they were done ready to eat, they were so salty, we couldn't eat them. I rinsed them off before battering them, but it didnt help. Any suggestions on what went wrong.

Easy and sooo good! As good as - if not better - than any eaten in southern food restaurants that feature fried green tomatoes. No time to make the relish but this is my 3rd time to use this recipe and it is awesome!

I made the recipe tonight and it was delicious. I used aunt jemima cornmeal mix with self rising flour included because I did not have any self rising flour. I added a teaspoon garlic powder to the cornmeal.Instead of deep frying I cooked them in a skillet with an inch of vegetable oil, worked just fine. I followed the salting routine but had to shake the slices to get rid of the water in the colander.
As to the relish: I made half the recipe and cut the vinegar in half again. I used regular cheap vinegar and since I love chives I upped the amount. After it sat a while it was delicious and the combination of the tomatoes and the onion relish is to die for. I am glad I finally don't have to waste all those unripened tomatoes. I am going to fry them up and freeze them for the winter, like I do with my eggplants!

In fairness, the review is for the tomatoes only, but have mercy! So, that's what all the fuss is about! Sad to say, but this southern ding-a-ling has never had a fried green tomato until tonight and I could kick my ample behind! Why have the relish? These were delicious by themselves and I will be making up for lost time, I can guaran-dang-tee you!

Very good and tasty. I didn't think my husband and daughter would care for the onion relish but they absolutely loved it, and wanted it added to my recipe collection of favorites.
