Ingredients

  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • One 1-pound container dried fruit mix
  • One 8-ounce container candied cherries, cut in half
  • 2 cups chopped walnuts
  • 10 large croissants, cubed (about 12 cups)
  • Whiskey Sauce, recipe follows

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 13- by 9-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.

In a large bowl, lightly beat the eggs. Add the cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, candied fruit mix, candied cherries and pecans, whisking to combine. Add the cubed croissants, tossing to coat. Spoon the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes.

Bake until the center is set, about 1 hour. Cover with aluminum foil to prevent excess browning if necessary. Serve warm or at room temperature with Whiskey Sauce.

Whiskey Sauce:

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup whiskey
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

In a medium saucepan, combine the cream and sugar. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat and simmer.

In a small bowl, combine the whiskey and cornstarch. Add to the simmering cream mixture. Cook until thickened, about 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat.

Even with a little improvising, this is a wonderful holiday dessert. I was challenged on finding the dried fruit. I used dried cranberries, dried apricots and dried cherries which are not candied. I also used Pillsbury crossaint rolls. Put them all together with the whiskey sauce Oh My Goodness do you have a wonderful dessert. I hope to make this a tradition every Christmas! Super thanks Paula!

This was a big hit at our Christmas party today. Don't even think of eating this without making the whiskey sauce to go along with it! Perfect pairing.

This was a big HIT! I eliminated the 8 oz of cherries and 1 cup of the walnuts (to cut down the 'fruitcake' feel- for those who think they don't like the taste!! I put a cherry on the top of each piece before I baked it. Even the pickiest eaters loved it -- the biggest part is the wonderful whiskey sauce. I drove decorated plates around to 6 different homes and delivered 'Christmas Bread Pudding with Whiskey Cream Sauce' to spread the Christmas Cheer!
