Wow. I made this cake for my father-in-law's birthday. Typically, I don't even like German Chocolate Cake and neither does my husband. But this was really, really good. We both loved it. I made it just as the recipe reads and, man, it was awesome!

This cake is the bomb! It's very rich and decadent, and very impressive. I followed the recipe exactly as written and it turned out wonderfully! If you want to impress, this is the cake. Its very time consuming but worth the challenge. I recommend serving this cake at room temperature so the chocolate ganache is not too firm. Make this one a day ahead if you're planning for a dinner party.

Hands down, the BEST German chocolate cake I've ever had! I actually skipped the ganache since I'm a purist and think this cake should ONLY have the pecan/coconut frosting. Plus, that frosting was DELICIOUS! Yes, it was a little runny, but I just let it run down the sides of the cake. Once it went into the freezer for the hour, it was fine. The cake itself was moist and very flavorful. This was actually the first time I've made a cake from scratch, and I honestly don't know how I'll top this! HIGHLY recommended!

I loved the recipee but it was however a little challenging if you arent prepared for the marathon cake baking experiance. I used 1/2 cake flour and 1/2 all purpose flour and it was amazing cake. I didnt cook the filling and mine was really runny but I let it go over the edge...that was ok but taste was amazing. I ended up freezing overnight instead of an hour and doing the ganash the next day and that worked out fine. I want to try it again now that I know how how intense it is to make. My mistake for just wanting to "make a simple german chocolate cake......how hard can it be"?

Simply put - Yum. This recipe does take a long time to make and has a lot of steps but it turns out beautiful and simply decadent. The filling is runny as noted in other comments but I just went with it and let it run off the sides which just made it look even better. I also poked holes in the bottom tier with a skewer to let the liquid saturate the cake. With the ganache frosting, I let it chill more like an hour not 30 min as the recipe suggests. It solidified just perfect for frosting.

This cake was a disappointment...maybe I missed something important because the cake itself had very little flavor. The Coconut- Pecan filling was terrific...but overall I'd have been better off making a cake from a box.
