Ingredients
  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 5 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar and mint, for garnish
Directions

Mix and bake the cake as directed, using a 9 by 13-inch pan. Cool and turn out from pan.

Using dental floss, slice cake in 2 lengthwise, so you have 2 layers.

In saucepan, combine the flour and milk. Cook and stir until thick. Set aside to cool.

In bowl combine sugar, salt, shortening, softened butter and vanilla. Beat with electric mixer until fluffy, then add the cooled milk mixture and beat until fluffy.

Put half the cake in a 9 by 13-inch plastic keeper. Spread all of filling over that, then top with the other half of the cake. Cover with lid and store 1 or 2 days ahead. Garnish with powdered sugar and mint before serving.

I just made the filling and, oh my goodness, everyone LOVED it... They begged me to make another cake the very next day. This is a great, quick and easy recipe for filling, and it made me feel like a more experienced cake-maker! :- item not reviewed by moderator and published

This cake is easy to make. It's delicious. I added raspberries and powdered sugar to the top. The raspberries give it a little more sweetness. I will make this again. item not reviewed by moderator and published

I just watched this episode and was laughing SO hard at Paula's facial expressions. She KNEW this recipe was going to taste horrible but made it anyway! LOL! Poor thing. I got sick just watching her eat it! item not reviewed by moderator and published
My family tried this recipe and thought it was ok but nothing special. We weren't a big fan of the filling. It needed to be a little sweeter. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I tried thid using cream cheese and it was good not great.Tasted like a boston cream sort'a.Nothing special may make it again. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I've made this cake twice now and I(and many of my friends and family) find it to be oddly addictive. On the surface, it doesn't appear special but once you start eating you can't put your fork down. I find myself slicing off small bites everytime I walk through the kitchen. My niece dubbed it "crack" cake. I did use cream cheese instead of shortening and also added about 1tsp of lemon juice to the filling. It is definately awesome. Can't wait to try it with chocolate cake as well as banana cake. This recipes a keeper! item not reviewed by moderator and published
This recipe is great and so easy to make. It will be a favorite. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Better than any twinky We have ever had.We enjoyed this desert very much it's a favorite around the house now! item not reviewed by moderator and published
We loved this cake. I have never cut a cake in half before. It is hard to get the layers even. This recipe has great flavor. The uneven layers adds to the charm of being homemade. Will make this again. What a fun treat to have. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This recipe was fun. I was really curious about the filling and had to make it. My snack cake loving son ate one piece and then asked if he could just have the cake. I gave my hubby a bite as he passed through the kitchen and asked him if it tasted like a Twinkie. He nodded yes but then grimaced as he swallowed and asked me why in the world anyone would want to duplicate a Twinkie. In order to find an answer to the question, he consumed about a third of the recipe and declared that it was all about the filling. Next time I'll try a devil's food cake and see if I get a Suzy-Q, my favorite. Love you Paula!! item not reviewed by moderator and published
We've been making this filling/icing in my family for over 50 years. You MUST cook the flour/milk recipe to eliminate a flourly taste. After it has cooled (frig is best), thoroughy cream the Crisco & sugar before adding the flour mixture. This can be done in a stand mixer, food processor, or with a hand mixer. I add a few drops of red or green food coloring at the end so that I can be sure all ingredients are thoroughly blended. Looks & tastes great on Hershey's 5-minute chocolate cake--a must-have birthday cake. item not reviewed by moderator and published
The filling tasted like raw flour. Did not like this recipe. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I made it for our early Thanksgiving dinner, and it was almost all gone before we ate. I made it exactly as directed (except for the mint). It tastes lots better than Twinkies. item not reviewed by moderator and published
How easy this cake was. You will not believe how similar it tastes to a delicious Twinkie. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This is obviously not a recipe BY Paula. I Threw more than half of the finished product into the garbage. The filling was horrible. After attempting to eat a small piece, I felt sick to my stomach for a couple of hours. My 12 year old thought it was "icky". item not reviewed by moderator and published
Great Loved it. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Don't rate it if you haven't made it, please. Like Twinkies aren't a processed food? item not reviewed by moderator and published
