We loved this cake. I have never cut a cake in half before. It is hard to get the layers even. This recipe has great flavor. The uneven layers adds to the charm of being homemade.

Will make this again. What a fun treat to have.

This recipe was fun. I was really curious about the filling and had to make it. My snack cake loving son ate one piece and then asked if he could just have the cake. I gave my hubby a bite as he passed through the kitchen and asked him if it tasted like a Twinkie. He nodded yes but then grimaced as he swallowed and asked me why in the world anyone would want to duplicate a Twinkie. In order to find an answer to the question, he consumed about a third of the recipe and declared that it was all about the filling. Next time I'll try a devil's food cake and see if I get a Suzy-Q, my favorite. Love you Paula!!

We've been making this filling/icing in my family for over 50 years. You MUST cook the flour/milk recipe to eliminate a flourly taste. After it has cooled (frig is best, thoroughy cream the Crisco & sugar before adding the flour mixture. This can be done in a stand mixer, food processor, or with a hand mixer. I add a few drops of red or green food coloring at the end so that I can be sure all ingredients are thoroughly blended. Looks & tastes great on Hershey's 5-minute chocolate cake--a must-have birthday cake.

The filling tasted like raw flour. Did not like this recipe.

I made it for our early Thanksgiving dinner, and it was almost all gone before we ate.
I made it exactly as directed (except for the mint. It tastes lots better than Twinkies.

How easy this cake was. You will not believe how similar it tastes to a delicious Twinkie.

This is obviously not a recipe BY Paula. I Threw more than half of the finished product into the garbage. The filling was horrible. After attempting to eat a small piece, I felt sick to my stomach for a couple of hours. My 12 year old thought it was "icky".
