    To MSJAH,
I never buy buttermilk, just add one tablespoon of white vinegar to a measuring cup, then continue to fill with milk, and let it sit for at least 15 minutes.

OMGOSH. THEE BEST RED VELVET CAKE I HAVE EVER TASTED!!! SO addicting. The icing is ADDICTIVE and OUT OF THIS WORLD! SO yummy and fantastic. LOVE LOVE LOVE. I have yet to taste a red velvet cake that compares to this one!!! I am definitely not a novice baker -- I'm someone who MUST follow the recipe exactly, and I did with this cake -- It came out AMAZING!!! So moist, so flavorful. If you love red velvet, this is your cake! Search no more!

I made this cake once before for my sister's bday. Turned out AWESOMEE!!! Followed the recipe to the T and it came out PERFECT! It was a HIT and everyone LOVED it!!
Now I'm on vacation and want to make it again for my local family, but where I am, they don't have Buttermilk...Do you guys know if the cake will turn out/taste differently if I create my own buttermilk (Milk + Vinegar?? Has anyone ever try it using the homemade buttermilk?

I am not an expert baker but the first time I made this cake I received RAVE reviews from my entire family. The cake was moist and delicious. The second time I made it I forgot a step in the mixing process and it didn't taste the same. So be sure to follow the steps in the exact order otherwise your cake won't come out as well. It still tasted good but not as the first one.

I wish I had read the reviews before I baked this cake. It turned out to be very very sweet and could have been improved by my adding less sugar than called for. The icing was good but there wasn't enough for the entire cake. I had to make another half recipe of icing to finish icing the sides of the cake.

Excellent!!! My wife's favorite cake is red velvet. Even though the reviews were mixed I decided to take a chance on this. I suprised my wife and made this to go with an anniversary dinner. I didn't have the round pans but did have a bundt pan, so I used that and baked it for about 40 minutes. After reading some of the reviews I elected to only use 1 ounce of red food coloring and 3 tablespoons of cocoa. It was very moist, tasty and had a great color! I also used Bobby Flay's cream cheese frosting recipe instead and it was delicious, very sweet but good! If you are using a bundt pan, you can half the cream cheese frosting recipe, otherwise you'll have enough to ice 2 cakes!

Delicious but watch out. DO NOT (AND MAY I REPEAT
ADD TOO MUCH SUGAR. I added less than what the recipie called for and it was still very sweet. Otherwise, it was a hit!!!

I made this cake for our dearest friends Wedding and it was a total hit with everyone... I omitted the frosting and instead filled it with cream cheese frosting then frosted with whipped cream frosting. YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, it was soooooo good! Thank you for sharing your grandmothers recipe.

Awesome cake!!! I've not made this with red food coloring yet; however, I used GREEN for St. Patrick's Day and BLUE for Easter. Both were a hit!

I used Marshmallow Creme/Fluff in place of the melted marshallows and it worked great in the icing.
