I'm from the South but have never heard of grillades. To me it was similar to pot roast. Pot roast with grits what's not to like? It is rather heavy though. I think you could use all canned tomatoes and get the same effect.

Great recipe! The only thing I substituted was the extra hot stewed tomatoes because I dont think they make that anymore so I just used the mexican style stewed tomatoes and I enjoyed it.

I've been using this recipe for a few years now, but I've just became a member. This extremely tasty dish is in high demand around my house. My son even had me make it for him and his date on their high school prom night. It has a wonderful flavor and goes great with grits. I've never used grits for supper in the past, but now it seems like a welcome change. I usually never use any chef's recipe exactly. I usually have to adapt it to my taste, but not this recipe. It's close enough to perfect for me. The only problem that I had was the flour from the meat sticking to the pot. (especially when I double the batch This was due to not using a seasoned dutch oven. I remedied this by adding a little more oil the next time.

I've made this dish on several occasions. It is honestly one of the tastiest "stews" I have ever had. There are so many layers of flavors. Way better than beef stew or pot roast. Awesome with mashed potatoes too.

The flavor of this turned out wonderful. There is prep time on this, but the quick cooking time saves you from a normal pot roast. I didn't have the spicy tomatoes, so I used regular stewed tomatoes and added a small dried chipotle chili...this added a nice smoky flavor. Makes me think that when I make this again, I'll try canned fire-roasted tomatoes with another chipotle. Mmmmmm.

I made this recipe just as it's written and I found it to be just the right amount of spicy flavor, but my children found it VERY spicy. We all enjoyed it.
