I saw Paula make this dish and decided to try it out. It was my first attempt at gumbo, and I have to say, it came out GREAT! This is definitely a recipe to keep in the family cookbook. It's one of those home-cooked meals that takes a good deal of prep time and quite a lot of standing at the stove, but it's well worth it. If you've got a few hours to spare, this is a great way to 'wow' your family or friends and makes enough to have left overs for a least a day or two. I served it with white rice. For dessert, I threw a few sliced apples in a saute pan with a little butter, brown sugar and cinnamon, then served them over vanilla ice cream. Great way to end a very rich and fulfilling meal!

Sorry, Paula. I love your recipes but this is a far cry from good ole Louisiana Gumbo. Chicken, sausage, and shrimp? My taste buds would be so confused. And too much okra will give the liquid a slimy texture. The addition of tomatoes is the New Orlean's way, but I prefer the true creole way. I guess if you've never had REAL gumbo, this recipe would work. This recipe is down right laughable to true cajuns!!
    P.S. Where is the rice?

This recipe was delicious. It takes a while to make, but well worth the effort.

Definately time consuming, however, involved the whole family in the cooking so time not wasted. Replaced a can of corn and a can of green beans for the okra. Even my finiky 8 yr old loved this and asked for seconds.

This Gumbo was simple and Oh-So-Delicious! We finished the entire pot of it in one night, so much for leftovers.
