I disagree with the posted prep time, as it does take considerable time preparing. However, the gumbo is top notch. I added cayenne pepper to this recipe as I like a little zip to my gumbo. Fantastic flavor!!!

This was my first attempt at gumbo and I found it eay to make wit1h a distinctive taste. The okra I really enjoyed. Can't wait to make a second batch.

Like many others, this was my first hand at Gumbo and I must say it was a resounding success!
I made a few changes: I used turkey sausage (healthier, used chicken stock instead of water and a beef bullion cube, a 28oz can of crushed tomatoes (instead of 14oz, and I added some cayenne pepper and gumbo file powder to spice it up.
The result was marvelous and I can't wait to eat this again tommorow for dinner! Definitely a super way to warm you up on a cold winter day!

This is the perfect dish for a cold winter day at the lake. The good smells fill the house. It is the perfect meal with hush puppies for a football weekend. Freezes well, too.

I liked this but couldnt eat a lot of it at once because it was very filling from the meat. My boyfriend loved it... next time I think I will add more veggies to it.

Gumbo turned out super. It was a long prep but worth it. Makes a big kettle full. I substituted chrizo and kielbasa for chicken and smoked sausage. I did use the shrimp however. Really hearty with corn bread. Thanks

My family has high expectations since my hobby is the "kitchen"..This recipe was such a hit with my seafood crew that it will be a featured item on our Christmas table! I did add some Old Bay seasoning.

I looked over a lot of gumbo recipes on this site but chose this one because of it's five star rating and because Paula's recipes are always "outta da park!" Not this time, sad to say. I followed this recipe very closely, except for two things: 1 I substituted knorr beef base for the bouillon cubes, and fresh okra in place of frozen. The one thing that sticks out is that I used a smoked sausage that I had never bought before (Johnsonvilleand will never use it again. Even after adding several tablespoons of file powder that the recipe does not call for, this gumbo was still very bland. Win some and lose some, I suppose.
